I understand that this is how they were named in XI, however, the term 'Great Katana' is a misnomer brought about by the localization and the term actually doesn't even exist when talking about swords. The actual term used to describe the longer swords Samurai used in XI compared to Ninja would be Odachi. I'm not disputing what they were called in the game, but the actual correct sword nomenclature. And to be really technical about it, the swords Ninjas should have used in XI are called 'Ninjato' which means the Samurai were using the Katanas, as they should be.
And being honest... yes, I'm a collector so the bad nomenclature bothers me and I'd rather see it go forward properly than continue misrepresenting the proper names.

Don't worry, in this game, they'll be called "Samurai's Arms" like we have "Rogue's Arms" now.
So, everyone will be free of nicknaming them as they want![]()

No idea why samurai have to be dps
We got no polearm tank, no magic tank, no blunt damage tank
We got no physical healer
So I really don't get the no sword dps thing
At current 24 dungeon
We have 1 tank:2 healer:5 dps
In game we have 3 tank: 3 healer : 7 dps
By some of the logic in this thread, seem healer is most needed
So there are neither no sword dps nor we have enough tank class is supportive
Yeah, I am fine with the Samurai being a DPS here instead of a tank, given the role balance being slightly out of whack due to the popularity of DRK and the rather disappointing start of the AST.
Those problems were already showing when the Void Ark queues were terrible for tanks.
If it has to be included into the next expansion, maybe 1-2 new DPS jobs will be fine along with one new gathering and crafting class perhaps.
i would love to see BST
next job is going to be a mage.... since we only have 2 of those , 3 tank , 3 healer , 3 melee , 2 ranged , 2 mage
they introduced melee , tank , healer and ranged....next 1 is mage

Sorry, but I read this and the first thing that went through my head was, 'I'm going to punch you in the face until you feel better!' I'm not sure how a 'physical healer' would even work in this game and it would just be an utter nightmare in raids to have to be next to the target you want to heal when that can change so often... Unless you bastardize MCH and make a class that shoots you with potion darts or something.

While not exactly a physical healer, something like the Mistweaver Monk from WoW would be cool. They weave heals with their hands using chi and not a staff, star glove or book. Otherwise I really don't see how they can keep making healer classes that are interesting unless they go into the shooting people = heals route (I'd prefer that didn't happen). Astrologian is a nice concept lorewise, can't speak for how it plays though.Sorry, but I read this and the first thing that went through my head was, 'I'm going to punch you in the face until you feel better!' Locking classes behind weapons was always a bad idea. Even more of a bad idea to not make each class role flexible.

Samurai is definitely the class that I am looking forward to the most. The elegant yet brutal style of swordsmanship expressed by Samurai is an aesthetic that I think suits my own character very well.
In the discussion between Samurai being Tanks or DPS I can see it going either way and functioning well. I can see a Tank Samurai charging into battle with a ferocious blinding slash that cuts through the opponent extracting enmity and turning them around to face away from the party. As a DPS I can also visualize a SAM with their blade sheathed and dishing out blinding quick draws to cut down the enemy while also applying bleeding debuffs.
I'm not sure which role the Samurai will have but it's honestly inconsequential to me as I'll master whatever is needed to be the best damn Samurai I can be![]()
