This.People say it because of a combination of the facts that the game's itemization system is so linear and content gets outdated so quickly that the only lasting goals or real point of character customization is glamour at this point.
It's sad but true.
Maybe it'll change in 3.2+ but meh.
Thordan's Reign is 1 month old, and once relics drop next week it will be completely worthless for anything other than (you guessed it) glamour.
How do I feel when I hear "Glamour is the real End Game"? It makes me miss the 1.0/FFXI days when End Game was about gathering with your whole LS to take down Great Buffalo or do leves together. Really just being with your whole LS not having to say "sorry Bob party is full.. find your own static"
I do enjoy Glamour, the gear in this game is beautiful, but I feel that even the glamour system is half-assed just like everything else in this game.

I find it funny given that, yes, I have a substantial collection of gear whose only future is as glamour... I don't use any of it for anything save wasting space. My favorite glamours are my 1.0 collectibles... don't judge me!

Ponies are the true end-game. If you don't have a Kirin, you're just a casual.
I don't have a Kirin BTW.![]()

It really feels like a large portion of the community is playing Barbie's magical eorzean adventure.

Pretty much this.I always read it as a joke, personally. Glamour is fun - at least, I think so. And since there's not much incentive or fun in leveling alts (imo), it's nice to be able to change my one character's look pretty easily.
It can also take a lot of time and, sometimes, a lot of money to put together good sets. Sometimes longer than getting actual gear upgrades.

If you weren't trying to be so dramatic you would think there is a compromise between changing your gear every patch (sometimes skipping entire sets because it takes more to gear up than for new gear to get released) and not changing it ever.Horizontal progression is stupid and boring. Even if you attained some item that had some kinda gameplay effect to it, making it last nigh forever what would that accomplish. I'll tell you what, it's make it so you have a permanent item slot so you never have to change the glamour you've placed on it. Do people complaining about vertical progression and glamour even know what they want really? I dunno. I just can't understand it seems.
Also, you change your glamour when you want to change your look, regardless of the stats on your actual gear. What you're saying makes no sense.
I don't think anyone is actually asking to never replace gear. Part of MMOs is getting new gear sets everyone once in awhile. However replacing gear that already really has no "real" purpose every 3-4 month is a bit too fast, especially since it takes 3-4 months to even get the complete set. I get some people don't want to wait a year like with other MMOs, but there has to be a happy medium some where.
You don't play many mmos do you? What are those numbers good for anyway? Beating a bigger baddie?
