People say it because of a combination of the facts that the game's itemization system is so linear and content gets outdated so quickly that the only lasting goals or real point of character customization is glamour at this point.
It's sad but true.
Maybe it'll change in 3.2+ but meh.
Nailed it.
It is infuriating at times when I think about it and often has me second guess my decision to keep playing. But I do love a lot about this game and the friends I have made in it so I suppose the pros still out weigh the cons for me.

It is absolutely true OP.
one-hundred percent true.
this game is fashion souls online.

The real end game is fussing about things on the forum.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME
I never can understand why people go on and on about items being replaced. Personally if I was forced to use the same item forever my interest would wane insanely fast. I'm motivated to attain gear if they look awesome. Not over a few numbers. What are those numbers good for anyway? Beating a bigger baddie? Why? For better gear with bigger numbers on it? Haven't we just come full circle then? Horizontal progression is stupid and boring. Even if you attained some item that had some kinda gameplay effect to it, making it last nigh forever what would that accomplish. I'll tell you what, it's make it so you have a permanent item slot so you never have to change the glamour you've placed on it. Do people complaining about vertical progression and glamour even know what they want really? I dunno. I just can't understand it seems.

I have spent more time running back and forth between the MB and my gear retainers, trying things on, dying stuff, accidentally buying the wrong prisms, and agonizing over which pair of stockings *really* matches that top, than I ever have in raid content (and I raided throughout ARR!). Sometimes it takes me hours to get a glamour right and my friends all laugh at me.
So yeah, when I hear that...I nod in agreement.

What do I spend my time doing? Making outfits.
Where do I spend all the money I make? Buying outfits.
Why do I level all the jobs? More outfit choices.
I settled on bard main because it fits my playstyle, and I use SCH as my back up non DPS job for the same reason. But once those are geared out, 99% of my remaining gear decisions are made on "What will look the coolest on my other jobs?" Any activity I pursue is in the interest of cool looking gear. Whether that's leveling more jobs, running content like Void Ark (currently after body pieces from there now), or making millions of gil on the market boards.
Interestingly, I change my glamour and appearance more often than I change my gear.People say it because of a combination of the facts that the game's itemization system is so linear and content gets outdated so quickly that the only lasting goals or real point of character customization is glamour at this point.

Everything we work for is glamours lol. Gear gets replaced in the blink of an eye.

The real problem I see here is that whilst glamour does indeed seem to be the de facto endgame for most players due to a lack of ways to progress their character, the game itself does not properly support glamour given how much of a focus it has. If glamour is the endgame here then we need a proper glamour wardrobe system to save all item appearances and not use up inventory space. It's hard to work on unlocking glamour options for your character when you only have room for a few options in your inventory and retainers...
