It's Sony. For consoles Sony/Microsoft license a game for their console and they get a cut of every game sold, maybe of the sub too. Why would Sony want a player who doesn't pay them anything.
Murky world of consoles.

FFXI was NOT the same. I bought the 2008 Vana'diel collection for the PS2 (back in '09, last copy in my city!) for Aht'Urgan and Wings of the Godess and the keys activated on my account across the board. The PC version I downloaded and the expansions all worked no problem; PS2 and Windows.

With FFXI you never had to buy the game more then once. Example...one time my graphics card died and while I waited for a week for the replacement I played on my brothers PS2, did not need to rebuy anything. Game was already installed...just logged in and played. You never needed to buy more then one key for FFXI...
This is a new thing with SE :/

You did if you went PC -> Xbox though. Or PC ---> PS2 or PS2 --> Xbox. Just not if you went Xbox --> PC or PS2 --> PC. (Rather, you had to have the physical disks to install and play the games on those platforms.)With FFXI you never had to buy the game more then once. SE basically granted a blanket PC license to anyone who had the PS2 or Xbox license on their accounts. They opted not to do that with XIV.
As someone else said it was not like this for XI, as long as you had an account it didn't matter which platform you were on as long as you had an install.
On topic, this game charges per platform. It has been like this for a long time.

This is true, BUT you still had to purchase the software for the system. I didn't get a free copy for my Xbox 360 simply because I played the game on PS2.
I really, really hope they bring back the free upgrade from PS3 to PS4 at some point. I find it silly that they ended it.
No actually you didn't, if I had bought a PS2 version at one point, and my buddy had PC, I could use his disks if I wanted to install it on my PC and play, never having to buy it myself. Likewise, if I owned the game and all its expansions for PC, and I spent the night at my buddies house that had a PS2 with everything installed already, I could just log in and play. Again, as long as you could get access to the installs, you could play on PC or PS2, I can't speak for xbox, but I do know you could do this with PC and PS2.This is true, BUT you still had to purchase the software for the system. In XIV, they make you register each platform key to your account. ARR (PC) ARR(PS3) ARR(PS4) -- XI didn't do that, all that mattered is if you had XI and the expansions linked, the account didn't care what you were playing on.
With that said, despite knowing you could do that, I still purchased my copies on multiple platforms, for the plain and simple fact that I like having physical copies of my own.
On topic, I am more annoyed with Hotbars and gearsets not being saved to the server so that I can more seamlessly jump between my PC or PS4 than I am with having to register each key to my account.

I think we seem to be misreading each other lol. What I meant was if you owned a copy for say PS2 that didn't automatically entitle you to copies for PC or Xbox. Yes, you could still play on a friend's PC if they had a previous install of the game. The way some of you guys were wording it made it sound like you were saying that you purchased the game once and could get the software for any system without purchase (which is false unless, like you said, you used a friend's discs).
And I agree about the hotbars. There should be an option to have them saved on the server, kind of like what they did in XI.
Hence the clarification. You could play on any system after linking your account, you were NOT able to get free disk from Best Buy for a different platform. lol
Oh weird xbox required the disc? XIV you don't need the disk though. Once it is installed you are groovy.
