It's annoying that a subscription game requires people to repurchase the base game or expansions for different platforms.
FFXIV should be buy once, pay the sub, play anywhere.
It could be greed, but perhaps it's an accounting problem, which is why SE only offered the upgrade as part of a limited promotion and used a marketing budget to pay for it. Sales of the games are probably tracked as separate items per console, and the subscription is handled separately. So, SE records a sale of the PS3 game. But later you want to play on PS4. Does that mean SE takes a loss for the value of the PS4 game? Who's paying for that loss? Does SE have to pay the PS4 console license on top of giving you the game for free? Are PS3 FFXIV sales a liability that eventually cut into PS4's profits?
Probably you have to pay twice because of something dumb related to how console fees and accounting works. Get it on PC next time.![]()
