Can a ninja explain this to me

I was told by a few static mates that ninjas require a fifteen second prep macro to get completely ready. I'm sure they're right (they are normally), but it seems like an awful long amount of time to setup.

What in the ninja opener requires this much preparation?

    Lol no..

They must be counting Mudra cooldown after Huton.. you don't need to wait.. by the time you finish you first rotation it will be close to up again.

When I do raiding this time is used to get huton with as much time as possible on while having the mudras available on engage for TA. Nothing worse than having to huton on engage then TA when everyone's CD's have worn off.

When you have lag, every action is an adventure.

Yes, you want to wait 15-20s before pull. You want to either pull with Suiton and eventually Trick, or you want your Mudra to come back 5~ seconds after pull so you can Suiton then. You need to have Trick Attack early in your opener, both for your sake and more importantly, the raid's sake, to buff everyone when they're at their strongest.

This. 15 Seconds is the absolute minimum, because if you don't suiton during pull, you need to do it after your first rotation, which is roughly 5,4-6 soconds into the fight depending on skillspeed. It's far from optimal though to weave a three step mudra into your rotation while your you're under B4B/IR/pot, so precasting suiton during pull is the best option. To do that, you need 20+ seconds.

A lot of groups (including mine) opt for the ninja doing the pull macro for obvious reasons.

17 second is the standard so nin can activate Huton and have it up for 15 secs.

Reading this makes NIN sound incredibly difficult to play. I'm going to have to try it out! =)

Forunately it's not, it's just the bare minimum you need in order to get trick attack off after 4 gcd's, if your group for some stupid reason doesn't want 20 (more like 22-23) seconds. Every kind of optimized nin opener needs 20 seconds though.

Like to point out also.. if it's a dungeon run or a multi part raid. You can keep Huton up the entire (read: a great portion) run after casting before your first set of mobs.

If you are efficient with it you can have 1 Huton cast up for 20 mins straight. This is considering that you know when to use Armor Crush to refresh the timer.. 1 min is enough to make it to the boss and have at least 30 seconds. Since you mentioned a static I assume you guys are pretty efficient in your runs and keep a good pace throughout.

I've had numerous runs where I cast Huton and maintain it through a great portion of the run. That's why I don't feel it's an absolute to wait when your Huton and Mudra are already fresh. Learning how to keep Huton up with Armor Crush gives you an extra combat Jutsu during a rotation where you may of stopped to recast.

It's pure optimization, not really mandatory.

Ideally you want to engage with ~5 seconds left on ninjutsu cd. You want to do a dancing edge combo while weaving in your offensive buffs (and potion if you REALLY want optimal burst), then suiton->spinning edge->TA->shadow fang->DWD+mug->mutilate->kassatsu->spinning->raiton->gust->(jug if on stun-immune boss where it has no other use to save for)->duality->AE. [TA expires here]. It's also ideal because that's usually the mark where mechanics begin, so having the initial burst already done helps.
