Look, you're talking about using a 'forbidden' art to turn your gear into Uber-awesome gear. That comes with a risk of failure. If it didn't, rich folks could just buy up tons of materia and try to add 4 of them onto their crab bow +3 over and over again. This way, it's a risk for EVERYONE to try to make what would essentially be the best gear in the game.

Don't want to lose your gear? Don't screw around with adding tons of materia to it, simple as that.
