Then don't tank them no ones making you but yourself
Then don't tank them no ones making you but yourself
I never argued against that, I actually said the same thing in my post a bit further down..xD
I just found the OP a bit..problematic because there was this hidden criticism that all people who want speedruns don't know how to enjoy the game when, quite simply, they might just enjoy it differently
I've done my fair share of tanking with all 3 tanks at lvl 50 (not 60 because I main healer and dps, but they'll get there eventually), I've complained on the tank forums about exactly this issue before..but I also think that taking the first step as the tank can prevent stuff like that from happening most of the time. I got into the habit of ASKING people pretty much right away how they want it, be it leveling dungeon questions like "do you want all monsters pulled or a fast run?" or others like "healer, do you think you can heal the big pull here?".
Well, and that of course combined with some observation :3
At the entrance I take a quick look at everyone's gear level to see if big pulls are a possibility, depending on classes and gear of the dps, the first pull is small to mid-sized, basically as a test how well they do on it. Depending on how fast the monsters die and how much the healer makes me worry, I adjust my speed to somewhere between super-slow with small pulls and enough time inbetween for the healer to have full MP again, to going all out
That way, people rarely feel the urge to run off and pull extra mobs.
I have had healers complain that I do not mass pull when the DPS is 2 ninja, for example, when their AOE is VERY limited. They have even left the party on this situation before. As a tank, I try to gauge the party LAYOUT in pulls before I even look at gear. Got a BRD and SMN? Alright, lets try a double pull, see how it goes. Goes well? Then let's see what we can manage. Got 2 single target DPS with very weak/limited AOE? Alright lets make this quick, small pulls the healer can even DPS through usually. It will end up tallying the same time, and you won't see stats being drained after just 1 massive pull. If parties show that they have the knowledge how to AOE, the classes to make those AOE pulls quick and easy, and the COMFORT (healers, looking at you here, PLEASE don't think you are gods if you are fresh 60!) to heal through those large pulls, just take a moment, gauge the party as a whole, and act accordingly.

Well, if there's a smn or a blm in the party, you can pull more mobs because their aoes clear mobs quickly, in fact, smn will waste his/her aetherflows if the tank only pulls a few mobs.
I totally am with you on this...
I have been leveling all my tanks to 60 lately and some of the players I come across sheesh. They make me never want to tank again.
I am more skilled at healer but I am no slouch on tank and I like to help people get through runs nice and easy. I am totally fine if people want to ask me to pull more if they notice after a couple pulls that I am being too cautious. All they have to do is ask, and make sure the healer is okay with it and I am glad to oblige the majority.
Instead of giving this consideration people just go and pull on their own and expect me to get it off them. Had a couple times people did this to me on DRK and I happen to have no MP so I couldn't unleash (I tried to single target and I got one off of them but..) they died.....and you know what they do? Blame me for not getting the mobs off them that THEY pulled; then proceed to create a big drama in party chat over it and treat me like crap for not being able to save them.
Queues take awhile when you are not tank so really...some people need to stop making tanking way harder than it has to be by just respecting the job; just like you should respect the healer and not stand in dodge-able stuff on purpose etc; you also shouldn't purposefully run ahead grab another pack of mobs, get hit to almost dead by the time you get back and then expect the tank to be able to save you. Especially when all you had to do was ask the tank to go faster.
Wrong. Tanks who die a lot, or who cannot hold aggro - those are bad tanks.
Fast or slow has nothing to do with bad or good.
People who are in such a hurry that a few minutes extra on a dungeon run is a problem - those people should not be using DF to find people to play with.
Heck, if they are in such a hurry they shouldn't have time to play games at all.
Yeah, I started just asking after a few missteps when I was new, but that doesn't change the fact that those things happen. Some people's default setting seems to be to treat other people like utter shit. Honestly, I was terrified of Duty Finder for weeks because of some of the treatment I got when I was new. I wouldn't queue without at least one friend with me. Now after a year and a half as a tank, I just don't give a crap. On the rare occasions I do solo queue as a tank (mostly when leveling Warrior now), I'll gear check at the beginning of the dungeon and if I feel the group can handle big pulls I'll ask if they're OK. I've actually had people get snarky at me a couple of times for even asking about it, or people that say nothing and then bitch when I pull big. Sorry but I'm going to take silence as agreement, and if people don't like it they can kick me and I'll instant queue into another dungeon. I've also had people bitch at me for not mass pulling when I don't feel like we have the DPS to handle it. Tanks just can't win. I dunno, I guess on some levels I just feel like if people have so much to say about how I tank, maybe they should be queueing as tank instead of healz or DPS. *shrugs*I got into the habit of ASKING people pretty much right away how they want it, be it leveling dungeon questions like "do you want all monsters pulled or a fast run?" or others like "healer, do you think you can heal the big pull here?".

Or not. If I run as a tank, I will pull at a speed I feel comfortable with - and no faster. If you (generic you) do not like that you are welcome to play with someone else instead.Still, as the tank, it is your job to lead the party and when others don't want to accept that, it's fine to let them die. But think of it like this: 3 people in the party want a faster run. 1 person (you) doesn't. You are in the stronger position since you decide the pace as the tank, but is it a nice thing to do to ignore what the majority would enjoy? I don't think so. So next time, maybe ask if they want a faster run and adjust your pace depending on them
When you enter a party, you've become part of a team. It's childish and egotistical to teach random strangers a lesson because you feel like frolicking through the daisies. If your group is cool with you going slow, then feel free to go as slow as you want. Not every group will be like that, and you should accommodate for your group's needs over your own.
That said, pulling ahead is far more annoying than someone just asking you to pull more, so I understand the frustration.
So basically you're forcing the situation to only have two solutions: my way, or votekick me.
Top notch teamwork.
