I can't help but wonder if more players simply care about what they're doing on Japanese servers? Like, if you enter Expert roulette on JP servers, do still see the majority doing 300-600 DPS with like 190+ ilvl?

This is the only comparison I personally know of.

I had some friends transfer alternative characters to a NA server for giggles. This was back when World of Darkness was still current.
They were blown away that it was a legitimate strategy to use the Tank Limit break on the Cloud of Darkness.

At the same time, for us that would have been ... the ultimate last resort? Like... Something went really, really wrong if we had to do that in a standard WoD group on my server.

Though, we have our own set of problems. For example, you can easily be booted from PvP atm if you do not stay with your group (A friend of mine is great at getting an opposing party to chase him, he runs them into the other opposing group and initiates a fight between them to distract them) often I find the group will agree with a vote to kick even when they do not know the reason.

Someone who has spent their entire life only putting others before themselves and only doing what would benefit or please someone else will have very little sense of self-worth. Sure, they function for the group, but outside the group they will falter and fall. There needs to be the urge to actually do something because YOU want to do it. Someone who actually wants to tank and play the best tank for a given fight is far superior than someone who does it because it's "best for the group" because they'll care enough to put everything into it. No amount of positive feedback is going to really improve someone when in the end they may just learn to loathe what it is they do.

I do wonder if you have this same semi-volatile reaction if someone in your LS or FC calls a ding for hitting a significant mark in story or levels. Do you snap at people in DGs who give a "Congrats!" when you ding a level? Modesty is great, but from what you're saying is all he did was make a post looking for a little recognition, not shoving it anyone's face unless you actually took that as someone rubbing it in your face which is a personal matter you should look into. People want to be recognized for deeds; this exists all over the world. It's when you flaunt it that it becomes an issue, but just wanting to be noticed is not some horrible thing.

Man I love it when this argument shows up, it's like people don't seem to understand the incredible population gap between Japanese players to the entirety of the western world. You have someone who is comparing at most a couple hundred thousand players all living on an island to the population of Europe and North America.

Not to mention the cultural differences and the differences in the variety of players on the different data centers. You are comparing a nation who's bread and butter for "core demographic" gamers is freaken Monster Hunter. The western population of this game dwarfs that of the Japanese population by hundreds of thousands in not millions in both current players and overall sales. Not to mention, to put it simply...

It's not a matter of "they just need the opportunity to prove themselves!" it's a matter that the majority of a pool of millions western players compared to the couple hundred thousand from Japan, from Europe across the ocean into the Americas and Canada do not want to play this video game at a competitive raid level.

They sure love to dictate on how semi to hardcore level content should go though. Like the character customization suggestion threads or discussion about the upcoming materia changes to non craft gear. Lots of people up in arms on that and I'm fairly sure plenty of them doesn't even do the content that they fear they might get excluded out of.

No, my numbers mainly come from reported retail sales from all versions of XIV, all the way back from 1.0.

According to honestly unreliable at best sales charting website vgcharts, Japan contributed to 351,198 retail sales of A Realm Reborn. Compared to the 2,064,981 retail sales across North America and Europe.

Let me stress that this does not take into account digital sales, which the west would easily dominate in total sales numbers anyway.
