No disrespect guys, but I'm pretty sure my idea wins.
Quit livin' in the past.

Relics should take time invested, but not be just an uber rare drop based on random luck.
Some key points:
- Make progress quantifiable (something you can actually measure and say "I'm xxx close to getting my relic")
- Involve multiple platforms of the FFXIV community (crafting, gathering, epic fights, puzzles, strategy, content, etc)
- Should not take more than a year for the average player to obtain (someone of relative skill, some social networking, reasonable amounts of gil, and plays an average of say... 10-20 hrs per week)
Oh Cairdeas is back. Thank god.
I mean, I'm often one to champion a hopeless cause and all, but where the Armory System is concerned, I seriously can't be bothered anymore. Hopefully you can pick up the mantle and help save the armory system for me.
Some people call me a hero, some people think I'm a villian.
Now I know how Napoleon felt....
Anyway. Don't worship me, I've not done anything special except speak my mind.
The Armoury System as it was described to us before release was an epic masterpiece that could have been enjoyed by everyone, but then on release it turned out to be a bit of a finger painting of some boobs by an immature little boy.
Sadly instead of fixing it they seem to be more interested in starting over. *shrugs* nothing we can do now. Eventually they'll probably stop calling it the Armoury System.
And, I'm not really back. To be honest, I'm only here because I was bored at work. I've been breaking my social hermitude and have been out socializing with people. I've actually met a lot of cool people in real life that I've been enjoying spending my time with. I even started dating a member of a Poly House and am slowly being adopted in. Life is great and I haven't had time to play games. In the last month I've played Deus Ex: HR for about 15 hours (all at once really and not since) and about an hour of Grandia this weekend just to show off to some people on a webcam how it was.
My gaming life is pretty much dead and I've grown out of it. *shrugs* people do grow up, I didn't expect to not do it till 25, but it might be the hormones I'm taking helping. :3

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
Realistically, Relics at this point would be obtainable (I imagine) something like this:
Kill 1-3 bosses, get basic relic weapon parts.
Gather 20,000 items from botanist, miner and fishing.
Craft all 20,000 items into a non tradeable key items. (rank 45 synth, all classes)
Talk to NPC, trade base relic item and 20,000 key items to NPC for stage 2 relic.
Kill 50,000 monsters with the stage 2 relic.
Talk to NPC for stage 3 relic.
Trade 500million gil to the NPC with the stage 3 relic to the NPC for the stage 4 and final relic weapon.
I might have gone overboard, but who knows.
Given how most of the FFXIV player base hates things being "hard" to obtain, I guarantee these will be buyable with either our overflowing gil surplus or through at maximum of 10k class/job marks -- Something painfree and very easy to accomplish that they'll have to rename them from "Relic/Ancient/Epic/etc" weapon to (insert new name).
It won't be anything worthwhile given the casual push for this game people want. If they must make it easy to obtain, hopefully it's Empyrean Weapon style progression, which can be varying difficulties.
For those that don't know, in XI the Empyrean weapons are generally:
1. Kill x amount of NMs so many times, e.g kill a Tiger NM 4 times, which you have to generally kill about 5 NMs x times each.
2. Kill a different set of NMs (VNMs in XI) which you pop with a certain item usually 4-6 times each.
3. Collect a certain amount of an item (usually 50, 50 then 75 for the final upgrade phase)
4. Profit.
That's as easy as I hope it gets if it's supposed to be "ultimate" weapons. However then you have crafters that say they're forgotten which then reminds me that they'll be crafted through easy to obtain items and thus no longer seen as ultimate weapons as you need only 1 legendary smither to forge the ultimate weapon (like Hades), not a full player base of them.
Yet that "crappy game" has a significantly larger player base than this "Most awesome game ever". >.>
got to agree with him here, having it require you to beat the game in many forms is cool, but requiring what essentially amounts to an insane amount of money, or the ability to trick 18 other people out of their efforts on a three time a week basis was a stupid mechanic. I understand they want it to take time and effort, but making the best items into a straight money grind, or pyramid scheme, is a bad mechanic.
I think in mmos in general too many people are concerned more with how many other people have an item, than the actual gaming involved to get it. I really dont care what its actual rarity is, make the difficulty to get it involve skill, and maybe even dedication, fact is if you were rich enough you could buy the whole relic weapon just by paying people off to do your dirty work. bad mechanic for an epic weapon.
No doubt it should be hard to get, but I hope they can be a little more original than to just copy the format from FFXI. If I'm going to get an ultimate weapon, I should expect to have to go on the ultimate quest to find it!
Make it start off something like mog tablets where you have to search the entire world to find the basic weapon in some random location. It can be absolutely anywhere, including in some obscure part of a dungeon that people usually don't go to because its out of the way or something like that. Make it so only one can appear every month or so, and the type of weapon is different each time.
Once you've actually found the weapon, you have to figure out how to unlock its power. You have no clues about how to do this. You just get the weapon and have to figure it out. Perhaps you need to bring it to a certain location in the world at a certain time or have it exposed to certain whether effects or have to kill certain NMs with it, or all of these!!
Once the weapons power has been released you then have to learn how to equip it!! The ultimate weapon chooses its master, not the other way around!! Perhaps you were not destined to have the ultimate weapon because it is not favored by your guardian diety and no matter what you do you can't equip it because you chose the wrong guardian ! So you can only use the ultimate weapon for your guardian and if you want to use it you have to be the class that it goes with.
So now you have to figure out which weapon goes with your guardian and start all over !!! Hahahaaaaaa
Once you finally figure that out and get back to this point, you can finally equip the weapon but its not over yet! You must prove to your diety that you are a worthy hero capable of wielding this weapon and the only way to do this is appease the gods by defeating their enemies ! You must fight and defeat 1000 enemies at the same time (of course you can use the relic weapon at this point). If you die then the gods will banish you from using the weapon and return it to its resting place where you must now start all over again by finding it in the world !!
If you pass this test then you will finally be able to keep the weapon !!
Or something like that .... /daydream off
Cairdeas, you said you played Grandia in a post.
This officially labels you as one of the cool people (b'.')b
Also always nice to hear people are having a good life.![]()
Personally they need to implement 2 more items types in mind. The next being epic/legendary/etc and then relics after that. I think it should be:
Common (white)
Uncommon (green)
Rare (blue)
Epic (insert color here)
Relics (red/orange)
Before relics we need another item type in my mind.
EDIT: Oh and sets w/ bonuses which could be the epics which could be tied to jobs I guess.
