Some MMOs do delete your character if you don't play for x amount of time. One being Furcadia which has been around since 1996. It's still patching/updating to this day.
Considering the number of plots vs number of players, I don't think it sounds bad at all. If there was a plot for every single player to have their own individual house, then sure, but that is not the way it is. Given that there are a lower number of plots vs players, it makes total sense to free up a plot from an inactive player, to allow another player that is active to get a house.

Plus didn't they say something about some gil returns etc...from an NPC? You are basically loosing your right to the Plot if you are out too long.

Also taking into consideration that some of the plots are different sizes, and some are situated more conveniently then others.. ya doesn't sound bad at all , at least not to me.

It's not the house owners' fault if there isn't enough houses available in FFXIV. I hate to see the community turn against each other when the real problem is Square Enix not willing to provide sufficient resources to meet the demand.

Houses that "are owned by players who no longer play" may be owned by players who don't care about socializing or who visit the housing ward at different times than you do.

    erm........

why do you play a MMo for yourself, mmo were meant to be community games like online table top mmo that you build up and both with friends and invest time and money on to help improve the game but play with friends.

If you take breaks, why? My longest break from ff14 was......... a week and only because i had no internet. If you get the stuff you want done, help other people..

I play this game 8 hours a day 7 days a week. I restarted 50 times due to character ADD and new psn ID.

And why have a house to simply have one? Buy one and use it.

saying sub slave kinda is insulting to the dev team to makes a pretty decent mmo, and you can't be arsed to sub to it consistently.

I thought people got over that nonsense when they thought about it. It's not XI, those Bounding Boots won't hold you off forever here.
Fun Fact, I own neither of those items in-game. I was using them as a standard "peak of my abilities and hard work" idol that people would still throw under the bus before ever giving up their personal housing in order to make way for all-FC housing.

So, feel free to replace those two items with "My full ilvl210 Esoteric Armor set" if you're that nit-picky about words I use.

Besides, the point still stands. Square Enix probably could've made this housing system work from the beginning by making it entirely FC-based. Then the reclamation system would be efficient, as old FCs that no longer exist would have their housing demolished to make way for new ones.
The reclamation system now will not curb any read amount of problems plaguing housing because personal housing exists. I've already shown that, at best, high pop servers cannot feasibly keep up with demand, and what is more likely to happen (a smaller percentage of reclaimed houses) will result in an ever increasing buildup of demand that will never be met.

So if we judge if this game is a good investment purely because of the desire to own a house, you're better off playing a different game.

It's simple, if your taking a hiatus from the game often, what's the point in having a house in the first place. And it's sad if your "ultimate goal " in any game is buying a house lol. How bout clearing content, you know, stuff that matters.

Guess what? "Stuff that matters." is pretty subjective in the MMO world. Glamor is pretty much the real endgame for some and housing is a big part of that for them. Just because you think Savage mode dungeons are the "Stuff that matters" Doesn't mean someone else does.

I don't know about you but it's quite hard to help people when you're:
    1)Hospitalized for X days/months
2)In vacation and cannot log in (plus why do you want to log in? you're in vacation...)
3)Have no connection because "Insert problem"
4)Having other IRL things to do such as "Insert long term duties such as military etc"
    5)Lack of Money

I just love the people who constantly blame us house owners "because we don't deserve to use it if we take a break" . SORRY, stuff happens: someone could get a car accident all of the sudden and remain paralyzed unable to play. Is it his/her fault for that?

How about starting pointing the finger to the proper culprit instead? I possess a house, I love decorating it but I completely support the OP: one of the greatest achievement for the game is not just a temporary thing if you leave the game, because "SORRY you don't deserve to use it if you're gone for too long. Yes even if you're unconscious, because you definitely didn't want it". I was so happy to grab mine because I know I would use it when I needed and if I left for a brief time, it would still be there.

    But not anymore of course.

The main issue in my opinion is that it's not that it's a bad investment, it's that Square Enix doesn't invest enough to keep it up as it should be: Right now what do you have in terms of endgame? Just one raid and 2 expert dungeons (let's even ignore the pvp please). But people keep playing as far as I'm concerned: it's Final Fantasy and they definitely notice that even if content is lacking, lots and lots of people will play because "Final Fantasy". We've been starving for content for 5 months but they could've added, I don't know, a little more than 2 expert dungeons and perhaps the relic that so many are looking for.

But it won't matter: people still play it. And now if we want to keep our houses, we are forced to play it.

Definitely not a good way to come back after a good break heh.

Sorry RL stuff happens to people but life goes on outside their own personal bubble.

So FFXIV is life? I mean I wouldn't be surprised of that statement since I've heard some weird stuff over these forums, but if we're to the point of putting FFXIV to "life outside of their own bubble", then I suppose the OP would be right not to invest time over "this" life to their "other" life.

Games are supposed to be escaping ways from real life, last time I checked.

Life whether it real life or virtual continue on regardless what happens to a individual, if bob get in sick or takes a break the game community continues on whether or not they there to participate.
