Getting rid of surnames

Its nice to see this thread going off into talks about how people choose names for their characters, as this is half my issue.

The argument that people will miss out the space in a full name - obvious

The argument that they make the game more immerse - null and voided.

The argument that a singular name actually enhances a 'full choice' of names - not answered.

Mostly what I've read is the pop culture references for why it is important to people to name their character. And thats cool. If you really want that, more power to you; At the least i'm asking for the same power.

Essentially it is feasible to do, and as I've stated in this thread, why can't this be thrown in with the PS3 "relaunch" as we will be given new genders to change to around that time.

With one-word names, anyone who has taken a particular name will then remove that choice from another player. With the surname option, you can have the first name and last name of your choice, allowing more versatility in your characters name and letting you get the name of your choice. This 'should' make you happy. To remove surnames is to LIMIT your choice for a name, not enhance it.

My characters name is Konata Chibi. It was my first choice for a name. I got the name. I am happy (b'.')b

The only other option is to associate a name with an account, like Champions Online does. This means you can have any name you like even if someone else is using it, because your name would read in full: [insert name]@[insert account name]
Champions Online also allowed me to add symbols into my name and spaces if I so wished, and no one would need to type in that name when sending me a /tell because only the account name was needed, which was all one word.

This way my name would read Konata Chibi@Konachibi, so in order to send me a /tell, you'd simply have to type in /tell Konachibi, and I would receive it regardless of what character I was playing or it's name.

I can see the flaws with 1 named characters but would still argue for the option. Because ulitmatly it IS more choice.

You did read my post, but you ignored the fact I asked for it to be allowed for people to choose either option.

Which would just cause confusion. This kind of basic thing requires to have one rule and have everyone follow it. It's a simple rule of game development.

FFXIV isn't life, it is a game, games are designed for enjoyment and to give you the things you want so you can enjoy it.

I did mention in one of the first posts in the thread that giving the player the option to have a last or not would be a good idea.

I will however admit that I had not associated the post i was replying to with the post you had made previous to it so I misunderstood what you were saying and made a response based on that misunderstanding. For that I am sorry.

I agree for more options but I don't agree with this one. No point in having both options at this point. They could make it where you have the option of turning surnames off visibly but there is no point to not have a surname other than just not wanting one for some reason. If that is the case make it as short as possible. It is only the people who have long spelled hard to remember names that bother me when you try to think out how to spell out their names and it makes it harder since there is now /sea all system atm. Most people rarely have problems remembering my name or how to spell it and I am sure that is the case with Konata Chibi and others, easy stuff.
