I <3 the XIII trilogy but I think I prefer FFXIV being its own thing.
Though I'm still bummed out FFXIV doesn't take place in Ivalice... Ivalician moogles and Bangaa's would have been cool races to pick from.

I wouldnt play it, at all. 13 and all its spin offs were trash. FFXV is still up in the air of course.

I really like the more modern setting, think it would make for some interesting possibilities but also take away from some of the standard mmo staples.
It sort of is - at least to a point. Every Final Fantasy is supposedly connected to each other by the 'Void'. I'd quite like to see some elements of Type-0 included in FFXIV at some point - perhaps if and when we finally see Garlemald for ourselves. I think that'd fit rather well (though overall I'd prefer the bulk of inspiration for Garlemald to be Archades from FFXII!)
Exactly, and not just that, the actual community team confirmed this ages ago, that Hydaelyn is not any other FF world or universe in a 'different time period', but it's own unique world and universe (sadly the thread in question, a past 'Letter from the Producer LIVE' thread, seems to have disappeared - it was formerly found here - but luckily I saved the post from Bayohne in question for posterity):
As for FFXIV being part of Fabula Nova Crystallis, considering that whole ill-advised reboot of FF's very lore and traditions has become such an albatross around SE's neck that even the company itself is trying to distance themselves from it (after all, why else was FFXV stripped of all remaining connections to Fabula Nova Crystallis?), given the fact the whole point of ARR was to reboot FFXIV after 1.0's equally disastrous development and launch, it made sense for FFXIV ARR not to have anything to do with Kojima and Toriyama's pet project.Originally Posted by Bayohne

A55: To be absolutely clear, there is no connection between FFXIV’s Hydaelyn and FFXII’s Ivalice. Likewise there is no connection with FFXI’s Vana’diel. Each are their own individual world. Based on this, there are connections between the things that appear in the world, and we’ll be revealing more in the future.
In fact, I probably would not have played it if it had.

I'm one of the few who enjoyed FFXIII for what it was. I liked the lore behind that particular game.
However, I thought the trilogy itself was a plot-hole ridden mess with a variety of contradicting themes and character worship that made absolutely zero sense. I wouldn't touch FFXIV with a ten-foot pole if it were part of it. As excited as I was for FFXV, I haven't even attempted to play the demo because the "Lightning Saga" left such a bad taste in my mouth, even though I know they aren't as connected as they once were. The mere association makes me cringe.
WinterMaintenance is coming
please no...lightning somehow harnessing the power of the operation of parallel worlds is one thing, but i kind of like the story and direction this game is going now.
