I currently work for a large company with stores all over the US and Canada. We've been around for years and are doing quite well, enough so that we even sell our goods in other stores now too. The team I'm on has three employees, and while we could really use at least one more person to help make things run a bit more smoothly, the higher-ups refuse to allow us to hire anyone else. So we're stuck making do with three people, even though we could really use four or maybe even five. And it's not a money issue, either-- it's just a case of them not wanting to pay for any more employees than they absolutely need. Hell, they're even stingy when it comes to letting us order supplies that we need. It's just the way a lot of businesses are and it's not going to change anytime soon.

Most likely because it could have a corkscrew effect. So your team gets another person, now that team wants one because yours got one, then those guys over there want more too, why not everyone else got one, then the others are like where's our help. Now the company is paying more in taxes, insurance, workers comp, we have get them office space a desk, supplies, or whatever to accommodate the new hires, now we got a bunch of FNG's running around that need training on something, more loss. Overhead just went through the roof, stocks went down, shareholders pissed. Did anything really get done faster and turned out better quality work?

I must be getting old because I remember when SE or Squaresoft and Enix (before the merger) was in the business of making games, not making games to run a business. I agree with the op +1.

Lol, Squaresoft and Enix were always about making money.
