Actually he completely wrong. SE told Microsoft we want our game to be available without Xbox Live Gold and Microsoft said no. So SE said that's to bad, no FFXIV for you.
Not arguing with the response, and I know in the normal course of forum debating it's rude/wrong/silly to resort to information on wikipedia, but I was following the information it had provided to me on the matter:
||An Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIV was considered, being announced to be in talks with Microsoft to bring the game to the system. However, in an interview with Eurogamer, Tanaka stated that, "The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system. [Live is] different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice. Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to... We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live."[30] Tanaka has said that development on the Xbox 360 is considered "on hold" and that there are "no plans" to continue development unless the situation with Microsoft and Xbox Live changes.||
Whether that information is right or wrong I have no idea, I just go by what it says with stuff I don't know or understand, until I found proof that it is incorrect, as I do with much of wikipedia.
Also yes FFXI was released on xbox360, I'm fairly sure you can buy it in their 'games on demand' section, and not just FFXI but also Phantasy Star Online which also operated on a subscription based model. If the above statement I C&P'ed from wiki is true then I don't know why Microsoft would change their minds on how they want Xbox Live to work, as it would reduce the amount of possible online-based games that could be released on their console, which in return also reduces their revenue and the amount of companies prepared to release games onto that console in the future.
EDIT: Ah actually, re-reading what I got from wikipedia, it doesn't mention skipping the X-Box Gold membership but since you've mentioned it I can see it is probably the problem.
EDITEDIT: I believe CCP Games also had this problem when they wanted to release Dust 512 onto Xbox Live. I don't know the details but I think it was along the lines of Microsoft not wanting a game on their console that was directly linked to another Online PC game (Dust 512 is an upcoming FPS game that is linked directly to the EVE Online servers, essentially molded two games into one giant universe) Expansion packs and additional content for this game would have also been free to players, no purchasing involved at all apart from probably a monthly subscription. Microsoft do not seem to like these generous ideas.
Sony seem to be much more leniant on how companies wish to use the PS3's online functionality, which is good business sense as more and more games are moving closer to the online gaming market. (They also have the niche on anime games too, wish so much that I'd bought a PS3 instead of an Xbox360 when I had the chance)
I do exactly this, but I also have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse along with a wireless Xbox 360 controller for Windows. I'm sitting on the couch in my living room typing this on my 55-inch TV right now, as a matter of fact.
A big TV with good surround sound is the only way to play XIV. A lot of people complain about the ambient sounds, but XIV makes excellent use of surround sound, even if it is only PLII.

You be soaked and dripping sarcasm off your fingers when you wrote this because I know it is not actually possible for you to believe that statement. Unless you just got a problem with console gamers for some unknown reason and doesn't matter how many facts I slap you in the face with you have it set in your mind that you are 100% right and nothing I could ever say or do will make you see it any other way. So which one is it chief? What you saying might have applied three years ago. The average gaming PC today is way faster than a PS3. As the game is now it will not run on PS3 at all. The polygon count is too high and the character loading would cause the game to stutter horribly. This game fries GPUs and PSUs... it might as well make the PS3 do orange light of death <.<
Whatever the eternally talking pony is saying in your signature, I choose to agree with her opinion on this matter. You be soaked and dripping sarcasm off your fingers when you wrote this because I know it is not actually possible for you to believe that statement. I don't see how it has anything to do with PC vs. console. All the console players I've ever known played for long hours - some all day. XD I'm the same way. Been a console player since I was a kid, and I can play for hours. As a result of the recent announced changes to the leve system, I have concluded that this change was made specifically to cater to the console system audience. Why? Because console players in my view, have a different mentality than PC MMOers. Most people I personally know that play console games, don't sit down and play them for long periods of time. Couple of hours, couple of hours there. The changes to the system support a solocentric, login, have something to do, logout mentality. One where you never have to really "get involved" with the persistent world.
Its unfortunate.
I would love to see a FF MMO title developed solely with a PC MMO audience in mind. My guess is the end result would be a much better game.
I have never seen a great difference in behavior between PC and console players, and I don't believe the issue lies there.
I do agree that there is a problem though. All this catering to short attention spans or people short on time, and I don't see anything for people on the other side.. Long, involved content for those who have plenty of playtime. Some of us are being left out. :x

i think the biggest thing he is doing is lumping all console players together instead of distinguishing the types of players. it's the same thing in pc players though if you take all the types of players and average them out. the console players that play the rpg/mmo type games seem to me to be exactly like the mmo players on the pc.I don't see how it has anything to do with PC vs. console. if i compare someone that plays madden 2011(console) to someone that plays wow(pc), yes, there is a big difference in the amount of time played over the life of the game. the reason is that madden you play for a bit and then move to the next game, whether it is the next years madden or not. wow you get and play it for multiple years. on the other side is if i compare someone that played xi(console) to the people that played xi(pc) i don't think you will see a difference in the amount of time played.
different genres have different types of players that are willing to spend different amounts of time on games. sports gamers i usually see them play a few games here and there, but the rps guys i see playing for hours on end. i could be wrong with my observation it just seems the different types of games cater to a different type of audience and i don't think it's a console vs pc argument.

I bought my PS3 specifically to play FFXIV actually. XD I only play it on PC until then. It was just unfortunate it got pushed to a later date. I prefer my MMOs on a console or at LEAST something that lets me use a controller. (Old injury kills my hand with moving my char around by keyboard. XD)
I also played XI on PS2 for maybe 4 years before I ever played it on PC. Usually playing up to 8 hours at a time. :x (Wasn't a lazy bum, I was ill and stuck at home.)
