I keep hearing people say the game is poorly optimized, just how much more performance could be had with this game if it was optimized better? and would the UI lag be reduced?

The UI lag wouldn't exist.
The frame-rate wouldn't drop sharply on computers like mine whenever they get too close to plants
The textures wouldn't 'bubble' into detail as they do
Chasing fleeing enemies would allow you to hit them when you ARE in range instead of having to run ahead of them
Loading times between area transitions would be reduced
Players in cities wouldn't have an 'appearance range' of 20m, more like 200m
You wouldn't have to stand around at the leve counter for 2 minutes waiting for the local leve NPC to spawn because for some reason the engine needs to load the other 30 people inside the adventurers guild first
Objects looked at from a great distance wouldn't look like a map of the first level of super Mario Bros.
Your character wouldn't become invisible for 10 seconds whenever you swap any piece of equipment or gear
The list goes on...
Drawing distance increase... yes please! The UI lag wouldn't exist.

Oh yeah and this would be nice too.
Would stop all those times: "Where are you, my mini-map says you're right infront of me about 50 metres away and we're inside a straight tunnel but I can't see you." *inch a few metres forward and PING!* "Oh... there you are"

Unlimited drawing distance + no stupid background drawing (instead same way the foreground is being drawn) would be nice. Oh and tesselation to manage polygon count on character models
But I guess there will never ever be tesselation as the PS3 doesn't support it at all... someone give the devs a 360! >.<
S.E asked Microsoft about putting FFXIV onto 360. Turns out Microsoft want Xbox Live to be a self-contained thing so they won't allow it to link to none-xboxy things anymore (I say anymore because there were a couple of games in the past that allowed xbox players to play with PC players).Unlimited drawing distance + no stupid background drawing (instead same way the foreground is being drawn) would be nice. Yeah, bad decision by M$. They will most likely change that again though as it is plain stupid and the community hates them for such stuff. Btw I never said anything about xbox! I obviously meant a roundhouse kick!S.E asked Microsoft about putting FFXIV onto 360. Ok not that I'm doubting that, but isn't FFXI available for the XBOX 360? How does that work out for them?S.E asked Microsoft about putting FFXIV onto 360.
