In general, an MMO's success thrives from sustaining players in the game.

A game containing challenging obstacles that impede in-game goals, be it the time to accomplish agendas; depth of difficulty, a time-sink in its own right; or a plethora of content to complete, not only compliment the chances of success but requires that a player pertains diligence, separating the hardcore from the casual, and grants a feeling of accomplishment & enjoyment once those impediments are perished.

So IMO, instant transportation does warrant less immersion.

Games with easily accessible shortcuts diminishes it's difficulty and staying power.

Agreed, so lets have a fun, long and rewarding adventure to gain airship passes.

Not we pay a guy 500gil to ride an AFKship.

    Or better yet...

How about a long and rewarding airship pass quest, like you mentioned.

& quests requiring us to board an airship?

    Win-win situation

If you want to skip the whole cutscene in the future when you can actually ride on it, it should cost extra gil and anima.

Apparently it's only immersive if everyone suffers.

However, immersion is broken all the time in the game. If you can't accept teleportation as legitimate, then you can't accept weightless inventories and currency supplies; you can't accept getting chomped, burned, slashed, pierced, and bludgeoned by your foes with no permanent scars and no visible marks. When people die, they should stay dead. People shouldn't suddenly wear their armor poorly just because they picked up a wand when they normally use a sword. People shouldn't get smarter because they put on a hat of smartness or stronger because they put on a belt of strength.

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples, but if you want immersion, I would strongly recommend playing this game called Real Life. It's pretty intense.
way to contort the opposing viewpoint. No one is talking about realism. But since you brought it up, yes the 100inv plus the 2 free retainers with 100inv is ridiculous. The only reason I don't have a problem with it is the amount of drops I seem to get in this game.

As far as the real life comment goes, you're playing the same game we are and posting and the same boards we are buddy. The fact that your lazy ingame probably means you're lazy IRL too.

Further you need a whm to port there so you can just insta port whenever you want and then port back. You have to plan your journey there.

Im not -against- porting. Im just against the FFXIV way of it. I thought FFXI balanced it near perfectly.
No one is forcing you to teleport. You can walk everywhere you care to go if you feel that's important to your immersive experience.

But instead, you see everyone else's enjoyment of teleporting as the problem, and that's really sad. It's important to you to make things difficult for everyone else, as though it's a challenge you know you can overcome and lord over everyone else with, even if it means the demise of the game in the long run as players give up on the time requirements just to start an adventure.

This is a game, not a replacement for your life. In real life, people suffer through hellish commutes coming home from work or school. Why would they want to come home and play a game that puts them through yet another commute every time they want to play a little while?

You're welcome to make your journeys as long as you want. Nothing is stopping you whatsoever. But don't try to impose these silly notions of "olden day travel" on everyone else in your elaborate troll thread over here. Even FFXI's Xarcarbard, which you site as a "remote place," has at least three insta-warps available (teleport crystal, outpost, and abyssea). You're just remembering it wrong.
