I have to agree with Apricoth on this one - everything is situational. If you can AoE and there are multi-mobs being pulled then AoE, of course. But if there is one mob that is about to die then focus on just hitting it 1-2 times and be done with it. A mob sitting at 5% is still doing the same damage as one sitting at 45% so why would you want to wait for it to be killed off with AoE when AoE does a spread damage across all mobs and might keep up that mob for longer than necessary. Its all about changing tactics and adapting with the different needs of the fight going on.

If people think there is only one way to do something, and if it isn't done that way they are bad DPS or wrong - well then maybe they need to be a bit more open minded and realize maybe that one way isn't always the best way.

Well the answer is simple: AoE DPS who agrees with OP just would like to have high "dps" number as long as possible.... nothing more and of course nothing helpful....
