I think you're reading far too deeply into it. Why shouldn't characters - both new and old - be at risk of being killed off? If anything, the game could do with killing off more to help counter the rather jarring plot armour that we see the Warrior of Light shrouded in. If not for NPC's dying then we'd literally just have a story where the hero wins at every turn, saves the day and everybody cheers as if nothing has changed. I, for one, prefer the gritty and realistic approach taken by the lore team and I really hope that they continue as they are now.
