No, it's because they find it fun, but glamours can play a part into that. Why do people play TCGs, or multiplayer FPS games? Because they find it fun, the ranking system also makes you feel like you aren't entirely wasting your time though. The top PvPers in WoW don't do it to get better gear, they do it because they want to refine their skills, be the top player, etc. FFXIV's PvP was, and still is a joke, that's why it's dead. Long queue times and poor balance (and people complain about one racial skill in WoW...), not to mention that it plays significantly slower than other games (including WoW) due to the longer GCD.
