An anime rule: The hero must lose the first fight, against a new villain.

Though beating the piss out of us would probably be a stretch. Getting the upper hand through deceit, maybe.

I agree with that. We even go out of our way to help some Doman children have a little adventure, of their own.

Economy wise they couldn't hate us because we don't have a local presence and sell through retainers. They may hate "Sebastianthebutler", but not you.

We don't buy out the local supply of dhalmel leather, we go out there and kill dhalmels until we find one with a circle of skin big enough that wasn't marred by our handiwork.

Though im wondering how the hell the mb hasnt killed local markets or changed society drastically what with all the allagan stuff.

This is probably the thing that most bugs me about G'raha Tia in the Crystal Tower storyline. (Yes, I'm talking about him again, but hear me out.)

He spends the entire time talking about how amazing you are, berates himself constantly for not being able to do more, and drops to his knees in outright despair at his uselessness after leaving the World of Darkness. By sealing himself in the tower at the end, he acknowledges his own inability to affect any sort of positive change in the present, becoming, in his own words, "nothing more than a vessel for Doga and Unei's blood." To the very end, the point of his character is to tell the Warrior of Light how great they are, but he only ever does it by putting himself down. It's supposed to be meant as hopeful, him finding something only he can do, but symbolically it's also an act of suicide born of despair.

    Yay for happy endings?

i hate how ishgards treat the warrior of light it's like OMG i saved your nation from a dravania conspiracy, rooted out a heretic disguise as an inquisitor , helped all your knights and citizens, and saved your city from a HUGE dragon on your bridge and you still won't let me in till i seek refuge simply cause you don't trust outsiders.

I didn't mind this as much-it added to the picture that something wasn't right in Ishgard.

I got over it once i started being called "Mistress Etoile".^^

I guess if there was one thing that irks me personally, its linking Kallera to prophecy. I do get it, chosen one and all that, i guess im more of a fan of stories where Kallera is there cause Kallera decided to help or Kallera is doing a job for real people, rather than "Kallera is acting in the interests of intangible giant crystals."

Your personal obsession with G'raha aside, valid point, but that's going a bit deeper than XIV seems to do.

... unless you look at the DRK 30-50 storyline, which actually gets a bit psychological. People like G'raha don't consciously hate us, but beneath the mask of civility and humbleness they probably despise us for being an untouchable idol everyone looks up to, who can do anything they can do better and then some.

"Some vagabond blew into town 3 months ago, and not only is s/he now taking on imperial elites but s/he's also the protegé of the infamous Geva? How in the world is that possible?! I've been a guard here in Gridania my whole life, but I can't do either of those things..."

Again, though, even if they subconsciously hate our guts we pull everyone out of the fire time and again, so they consciously accept us because of how useful we are. Sentimentality aside, nobody really cares for us except as a weapon to point at whatever problem they have, something our Shadow gladly points out.

To be fair, figures like the Warrior of Light seem to pop up regularly in the World's history, so saying that another hero would appear isn't quite predicting tonight's lotto.

Well, as long as I got you to gush about Dark Knight, again, it's all good.

This game has moments where it's almost self aware enough to realize it's hero archetype is an unrealistic myth, even scary at times, but at the end of the day, it still tries to be a power fantasy about how great, you, the hero are, and the vast majority of the characters we meet exist solely to reinforce your greatness, to the great detriment of their own development as characters and human beings. That so many players were glad to see the Scions go at the end of 2.55 only goes to show how far in that direction FFXIV had gone by that point.

Heavensward seems like it wants to break away from that, but looks can be deceiving, and like many things, it is simply too early to tell for sure. But there's always hope...
