I've lost all hope for EQNext. All the good developers fired and no news since. Smedley is even gone now. Deybreak seems more interested in making facebook games. At most it will be a Sandpark, 75% Themepark like Archeage.
Now, that isn't to say SWG wasn't a Sandpark, however it was 75% Sandbox, 25% Themepark.
the mmorpg as we know it, is on the decline, why this? because since WoW the genre didn't evolve really, we did get a few feature and such, but no real evolution.
some talk of the sandbox, but this type too of mmorpg is wrong, people want to enjoy the game, indeed some like to build or create a society but most player simply want to enjoy adventure and such.
we have a good example of themepark mmorpg with FF14, but actually it's the perfect example of why the mmorpg is declining. the genre need to evolve and become what it was means to become.... a game that allows to explore a world! be connected to that world and such.
the theme park type as we know it is a perfect example of how it didn't evolve. soo far FF14 have one main activity, raiding.... it's like a theme park that only have one rollercoaster! is dumb. indeed people will say me, that we have other activity, like goldensaucer that are not different of the stand and the story quest, that not different than a parade or a show.... but we need more content, more varied content... you have tons of different type of attraction into the themepark, soo far FF14, like every theme park mmorpg, do this error, he do offer only one main activity, if you don't do it, you have no real reason to play it.
the genre is dying because they are scared to offer more.... hunt was a possibility, it had the potential to become one new activity, until they deliver us a joke... a zergfest not working as intended. people love to speed run content, why not offer a time attack mode? why not offer activity that change and make us feel part of the world! soo far when we do finish the story quest... i feel disconnected of the world. i don't have any reason to play outside do my caps. that the trouble they need to solve if they want to offer a second life to the genre....
The MMO formula and the way its presented has stayed the same since Everquerst and WoW simply streamlined it and reduced the time that players had to invest. All the other genre added on to whats already established but the MMO formula has remained unchanged. Develpers can add to the formula and tweak it a bit by adding character progression to endgame but then they would have to be willing to let character levels float. If character progession match ilvl progression we'd be lvl 80 right now.
WoW did create the code used by a lot of dev now for the mmorpg theme park, indeed other game before did same, WoW did create nothing, they have reused most of the idea they have added to the game. The MMO formula and the way its presented has stayed the same since Everquerst and WoW simply streamlined it and reduced the time that players had to invest. All the other genre added on to whats already established but the MMO formula has remained unchanged. but since wow did work soo well dev and player have simply forget that the genre was constantly evolving.
procedurale mission? Anarchy online was doing it (and i'm sure other game before)
more random fight? was done too before...
even different type of content, why it don't appear anymore, because people want to copy WoW thinking it what work...when people get tired of the WoW formula. i do think that the futur of the mmorpg will ask for more than raid as endgame.... i do hope to see different activity that will not rely on scripted environnement and fight.
Omg really?...wow i was looking forward to EQ next. It looked very promising and the developers were sitting there with the community building the game...damn that really does blow :/. Thanks for the info!.
How.. is that wrong? Players can make really nice content. It was proven. Developers will never make content faster then players can complete it. So.. why not give more powers to players? Why not have players make everything...? You could even have them make dungeons and BE the main villains of a game...
I think people need to sit back and see how powerful a Sandbox MMO could actually be.
Yep, which is why I have lost all hope to MMOs. Developers have no idea how to create anything new.
I think "Massive Multiplayer Online" automaticly means "Generic Themepark MMO" now, Sandbox MMO is a being written out.

Sandbox mmorpgs aren't the answer because developers don't offer an experience or adventure the payers have to create their own experience which leads to the majority of player base being lost and standing around looking at each other. Themepark mmorpgs main problem is they have only a few rides at end game centered around capping tomes, dungeons, raiding and pvp. There really aren't a lot of role playing and character progression in mmos theses days. Single player games have more role playing and character progression than mmorpgs which is sad.
