So that definition does have its flaws.

I agree on that point, however, I'm referring more to the ones that feel the need to rage at someone and throw insults rather than be tactful as you stated above. I don't consider your statement an elitist response. Most people (i said most lol) would take that with a grain of salt and move on with no hard feelings because of the way you said it.

I cannot "become" elitist for I am here to help and not here to belittle those that are less fortunate than me. Aka I will not betray my morals.

The term elitist means something different to everybody. Prior to 3.0, my friend got called an elitist for trying to explain Ramuh EX's mechanics in a DF group with new people. We suspect it was the dread gear he was sporting at the time that caused people to think he's "elitist".

If I had to define elitism, I would say it's someone that acts like a better-than-you jerk. But that sort of attitude isn't reserved for endgame raiders, in my opinion. I've run into a lot of people in solid tome gear with no endgame raiding experience that come into instances with a sour attitude.

As for myself, I don't think I'm elitist. I have expectations for different groups. If I'm in a farm group, I expect everyone knows the mechanics and is, to an extent, comfortable in handling them. I never expect perfection from anyone, because, well, stuff happens. In a learning group, I just make sure to go into an instance next to a mender, because I know I'll probably need it. XD

People throw elitest aroud far to much in mmo forums.
A true elitest is someone who plays at the pinnacle of whatever aspect of the game they enjoy, and look down on all others for not beielitism ng at the same level.

Playing well, and expecting others to at least know their role and an acceptable rotation, is not elitism. Its common courtesy to the people on your team.

Talking down to others simply because they are still gearing is not elitism, it's just running your mouth and being a d-bag, while letting your gear play for you.

Asking for challanging content and rewards fitting the challange is not elitism. Its wanting challange for your level of playing. Even wanting to show off the gear from that content is not elitism, its being proud of overcoming the challange.

I could make a big list, but you get the idea.

I've been an elitist in almost any mmo I've ever played, no it's not something to be proud of really but some people just don't like carrying other people, why should someone that puts lots of time and effort into the game to be "good" have to deal with people who don't put any effort into the game? this is why people are elitists and this is what happened in FF11, people won't carry and they will auto kick you if you are a carry.

Elitism is good for the hardcore/mature/noncasual crowd, to play with them you have to actually put some effort into what you do.

Elitist: a person who using their player status or experience to belittle or coerce others.

That's pretty much it, imo. The term has been around for a while, and used for similar situations.

Less so "Toxicity", but from how i've seen it used, it refers to an opinions on the particular community.

I used to want to be in that crowd, but not anymore. I don't share their opinions, and I don't mind others if the clear is attained.

There are plenty of bad ones on both sides but people sure are quick to call others an elitist when they aren't getting their way.
    Amen to this.

The bit of elitism I have now entered my online personality once I realized how many players were intentionally not trying their best because piggy backing off of my play was good enough to win content for them, while requiring minimal effort on their parts.

Last night's Library was a good example. The SMN told us he didn't know what light platforms on the lost boss do so he didn't bother with them and stood in vulnerability orbs. Died obviously, didn't raise the healer who also died because he "just wants to stay busy dpsing", meanwhile doing far less damage than me, a NIN, who was running around doing mechanics constantly, we wiped.

He did the same thing again but the healer didn't die this time. Sorry, I'll just be elitist if not accepting his attitude means I am.

Edit: Said SMN was also on his 4th 60, so yeah....not a newb.

I ran into this a few times, like once when i was going into the great library for the first time as part of the main scenario quest, they wanted to run through the whole dungeon, fully geared, and of course i couldn't keep up cause i hadn't finished the main scenario yet to even begin to get good gear, and they kicked me after dying twice.
    next group went no problem
