Why should I be expected to DPS when that's not in the job description? o.o

You don't have to DPS, but finding DPS opportunities that don't conflict with your major role of healing and keeping the party alive means you're maximizing your classes' capabilities. To clarify, by healing only you're doing the bare minimum. When doing DPS and healing, you're pushing your classes' potential.
If it's on your skill bar then you should use it. It's all about learning to get the most from your class. And it's more fun to find ways to weave skills in to your rotation instead of just being the Healer and it being a snore fest on a good run.

Killing mobs to complete duties is in every combat class' job description. The key difference among the roles is what their primary responsibilities are in a group setting so that essential functions are handled. Once minimum requirements are met, your concern shifts to making things die faster. Same is true of tanks in that they aren't best played as passive enmity sponges.
