Actually we do know what the key item is.Reading Comprehension 202
Players can never fail to attach the first piece of materia. However, the success rate progressively decreases with each subsequent piece of materia. A failed attempt to attach materia will result in the loss of all items involved in the process, barring the key item.
Don't act like you know better... We don't know what this key item is but its the exception to the ALL. My interpretation is the gear won't get lost but the materia and the other items required in the materia synth will be. Since the Gear is the KEY essential item in Materia Synthesis.
Attaching materia requires the “materia melder” key item, an apparatus which can be obtained via a quest available to Disciples of the Hand level 18 or above

People have been focusing strictly on War/Magic as far as materia goes, but I wonder if there will be any gathering or crafting enhancement materia like +Gather or +Craftsmanship. Would be nice to reward them in the materia system too for how essential they are to it![]()
Well either we're both crazy and it never happened, or someone at some point will find what we're looking for lol
Hi Sonic,
Yah!I agree.
I'm shocked and pleasantly surprised that they're now allowing us to attach up to 5 (FIVE) Materia to 1 Weapon! Wow.![]()
I wonder if that's the "Forbidden Technique"?
I always figured it was 1 Materia Attach, and the "Forbidden Technique" was allowing you to attach a 2nd one.
Maybe it'll be 1 Guaranteed and Forbidden Technique for #2, 3, 4 and 5 attachments? Interesting.
They might be sellable item's or tradeable at least so a DoW/M can trade them to a crafter friend to make the items for them, or buy in the market craft the item and sell it for a profit, since they will be very good gear they will be expensive. You will waste time in dungeons for gear that turns into materia you can't get elsewhere. (This is just my opinion). They will have to make it where NM/dungeon gear is not useless. It has to be part of the equation.
Or what he said
I just thought. How can a crafter get into a dungeon to get the drops. That would require the crafter to have a higher level battle class.

I think we also need to look at the difficulty for adding the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th materia.
What do you guys think would be fair?
- 1st is 100% success, we know this
- 2nd, 80% success?
- 3rd, 60% success?
- 4th, 40% success?
- 5th, 20% success?
Does this sound reasonable? With these odds you have something like a... 4% chance of getting an item from basic to fully decked out, without it breaking.
I'm hoping they go with my idea of needing to convert say a dungeon weapon to get the best (tier 4) materia. But that may be a bit overkill considering how many tier 4s you're going to need. Tier 4s might end up being super rare anyway and the intention might not be to have you stack 5 of those in an item.
Alternatively what could happen is dungeon weapons turn into materia that can't be obtained anywhere else, such as double attack rate etc. You could stick that in along with 4 more common tier 4s.
The materia system certainly sounds a lot more interesting than when it was first announced. But it seems standard HQs aren't going to be rare, meaning I should probably sell off all +2/3s I own right now.
