    Quoting [dev1017] post. Attaching Materia

Attaching materia requires the “materia melder” key item, an apparatus which can be obtained via a quest available to Disciples of the Hand level 18 or above (with the exception of culinarians and alchemists). The apparatus allows players to attach one piece of materia per item.

Players who have met certain requirements can obtain the more advanced ”augmented materia melder,” which allows the attachment of up to five pieces of materia per item. Players can never fail to attach the first piece of materia. However, the success rate progressively decreases with each subsequent piece of materia. A failed attempt to attach materia will result in the loss of all items involved in the process, barring the key item.

I hope I made this clear enough for you.

You take the risk, you could end up with nothing. Even the simplest of MMOs have a system like this. Get used to it.

Don't act like you know better... We don't know what this key item is but its the exception to the ALL. My interpretation is the gear won't get lost but the materia and the other items required in the materia synth will be. Since the Gear is the KEY essential item in Materia Synthesis.

I'm sorry if I did not make it clear to you that I DID understand what was contained in the post about materia crafting. I just hope that they had made a mistake upon translating. This if implemented will just be another bad decision that they will end up having to correct. At least all crafters that have been complaining might quiet down a bit now that it's been made clear the "complexity" they felt they were losing will come back in spades. Better start hoarding those crafting mats now you're gonna need em.

If you fail a subsequent try you lose the materia AND the gear?
I'm not totally sure but a lot of this sounds like the way you could add these stones in Aion to boost stats of your gear. Same concept, probs stolen from previous FF games with Materia but it worked like this. You tried to use the stone to boost stats. Lwr grade stones were easier to add with little to no failure. The more you tried as is the case here, the lower the chance of success. If you screwed it up, u just lost the stones (materia for us) not the gear. Your gear just went back to it's standard self and you could try again. That's how I read it but, I could be wrong.

Either way, I like this addition.

lol guess I do. I stand corrected though I don't remember reading anything about that Materia Melder before... Where was that originally posted?

edit: Ah that explains why... There is a new note that came out amending the lodestone page that I haven't read yet.

And now everything falls into place. Those who were complaining about the new crafting system should certainly see its merit with this materia system in place.

A lot of gear is going to be removed from the market via materia conversion and by it breaking when people try to slot more than one materia into existing gear. In light of this it seems like the more simple crafting requirements would be almost necessary to keep a steady stream of gear to appease people. Also with rewarding the gathering of HQ materials with a HQ finished item, this actually helps things. People won't be as apprehensive about slotting multiple materia into HQ gear because it's more consistently available but then they'll end up breaking it more than likely, requiring them to go make/buy a new one. Not to mention people wanting HQ gear to turn into materia.

Edit: I could be wrong on the gear breaking part though. I mean the notes say "barring the key item" which to me means "Key Item: Advanced Materia Melder". Even in the event the gear doesn't break, you'll lose all the materia which means you'll have to seek out more.

All in all this materia system will certainly help the game's economy.

Nice RP post but I think everything mentioned in in about how you actually use the system was in the original post about material.

Got some names of the materia and found they are grades 1-4 though.

This system sounds amazing, and has SO much potential for individual gear customization.

I'm all in favor of losing the whole shebang one a botched attachment. It will make a huge lucrative long term market for gear of all types and materia (assuming its trade-able). Just improve the Buying/selling systems and it will be win/win/win across the board.

The sound of the system reminds me of the weapon upgrade processes from a few MMOs, One i related it to most from my experience is Ace Online, sure its a space flight PvP game, but you could use stat cards to Upgrade weapons, it was safe for 5 upgrades, then the risk of blowing up weapon started, and after 10 upgrades you got into the really low % chance for success (we are talking less then 1% up to 5% max). of coarse it was a free to play game that sold protection cards on their cash shop (that would only cause you to lose the card). I can imagine some weekly quest or something that will give you -one- safe materia attachment for a huge cost somewhere in this system.

Consider this " The Merit System for Crafters" *that will help War and Magic* and it seems complex, Loss of parts for Materia System. I think that's a steal of a trade if you ask me... hehe.

I am not a very high level, nor do I play very often, but when I first saw the crafting changes I was one of the people who though to themselves "I might actually try crafting again." But now seeing how expansive the materia system is going to be that has become "Wow, I am definitely going to try crafting/materiaing." These two changes I think have turned the crafting system into something really interesting that will appeal to both the "hardcore" and casuals like myself.
