Sealing Odin was the Allagan Summoner Wyu's doing. They were Atempting to defeat Odin, likly to seal him "properly" but several were killed and they almost lost until Wyu sacrificed herself to seal Odin in a pillar of crystal that would later be called "Urth's Fount".

Also, now that we know its possible to actually turn yourself into a primal i think the origenal Odin did just that while making his blade (that he aparently looted off an Au Ra somehow, somewhere) as a catalyst for his mortal will to summon him back. (now that i think of it, thorden's blade was left behind too. hmm)
now that you bring it up i am still hopeing they will allow DRK to use thordans sword cause while it was like a 1 handed sword for him for anyone else it would be a giant greatsword and it looks awesome...
