My boyfriend pointed this out to me last night, but there is a very subtle but effective reference to real-world history in Coerthas Western Highlands - in the north-eastern corner of the map (the frozen lake at Lancegate), there is a ship frozen in the ice of an unusual design not seen anywhere else in Eorzea (a kind of paddlewheel steamer), called the 'North Star'. Not really strange, except if you stand near it's bow you then notice it was bearing straight towards a giant rocky spire jutting out of the lake when the lake froze over (which has the appearance in the blizzard of an iceberg). This obviously is a reference to the famous ill-fated Titanic which, naturally hit an iceberg on it's maiden voyage and sank - the Titanic was owned by the North Star Line.
Coincidence? Maybe, but I like to think it's a reference to the Titanic disaster.
EDIT: and doh! I think I really need to check my information - the shipping company that owned Titanic was the White Star Line, not the North Star Line. Still, the ship in the ice in Coerthas Western Highlands does still seem to be a subtle reference to Titanic anyway.![]()
Smell like tree spirit
There is a quest in the Helix that makes you fight an Enforcement Droid 208, clearly a reference to Robocop's E.D 209. Thought this was an awesome reference.
A million times this. The music and the cut scenes are the best in the game. FF1 is the first game I ever played on the NES and I used to just stay in the cave listening to the music. And the lady doing Matoya's voice is just on point with her delivery.Biggest kick in the Nostalgia refernece in 3.0 is...
SPOILER
Now find a way to incorporate Terra's theme within the Lore of FFXIV! :P

Her "overworld" theme, or the "Esper" theme?A million times this. The music and the cut scenes are the best in the game. FF1 is the first game I ever played on the NES and I used to just stay in the cave listening to the music. And the lady doing Matoya's voice is just on point with her delivery.

There's a few ways actually.
First... consider for a moment that FFXIV is all about "beastmen" and Terra is half human and half "esper" ... AND the Garlean Empire (and the Allag's) are all about not respecting life. So there's at least three ways that can be done.
eg Espers = Primals. We know that already, but in the context of FF6 they were simply another species in another world. We already had Lady Iceheart/Shiva do this half-mortal/half-Primal bit already.
So the next logical answer is finding someone who can do this already... or the Garlean/Allags did already. Like in FF6... it's never clear stated how they captured "the witch" just that she burned a bunch of the soldiers before being captured.
Like all things considered FFXIV may as well be a spiritual sequel or parallel to FF6. Between the Garlean Empire, Phantom Train, Warring Triad, the War of the Magi, Magitek, Relics, Mog/Moogles, Floating Continent, Doma...
Like... take a quick look at the FF6 overworld map...
Note where the Doma castle is. Now look at the shape of the Western Continent.
Now look at the Western Continent
Now look at the FFXIV map...
For all intents the FFXIV map could easily be half of the western continent of the FF6 world of balance had the North-Westernly corner been obliterated. We don't know what the rest of the world looks like.
Like speculatively speaking, had FF6 been populated by the FFXIV races, the game we're playing now would be it. The level of technology is consistant.
As for nods to other FF games.
I'll also mention that at one point in the opening, FFV a character takes off on a Dragon and from a Castle. The reverse of HW. It's been forever since I played it (I last played it when it was just a fanmade-patch before the PSX version ever came into existance.) There is even a Dragon in the FFV logo.

- Quest 'The Nest Episode' might be a a reference to Dr. Dre "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" [NSFW] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL7LVzym1bs), specifically the line ""So jus' chill, 'til the next episode". I just say this because of the previous Biz Markie reference (someone on the staff likes old hip hop).
- Quest 'No Country for Young Moogles' -> 'No Country for Old Men' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Cou...Old_Men_(film)).
