Here here!! This kinda talk is for the '90's...people just bad mouth Macs just to sound cool, or that they heard they are bad from a few people so they must be bad! -.-; They are actually the most stable systems around and work amazingly for media and programming. So good news everyone! I just officially got my refund credited back to me so I guess I am off to buy the PC version. I did try installing the game to a standard drive and it did absolutely nothing, tried deleting the files they said may be messed up and still crashes every minute or two in game, completely unplayable.
And regarding this mac vs pc "discussion".... why is this even a thing? It is 2015 people, and we just got gay rights and equality, but PC "gamers" can't accept Mac has the ability to play games? Wtf people? And just fyi my mac pro plays most games BETTER than my buddies "gaming rig" that he payed very close to the same amount for so take that, hahahahahahaha
Nope not a fact. A definite preference.
Tis a shame that they didn't follow Blizzards lead with this release... Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm, Starcraft ii, Hearthstone, WoW all are amazing games on the Mac platform... They run smoothly at high fps. Mac's are perfectly capable of playing high end games so long as they are written for the Mac. This kind of adaptation is lazy and makes the Mac client inferior to the Windows one, which the developer seems to try to blame the Mac and OS X for. It really makes me wonder if they even tried playing any other games on a Mac to see what its capable of. And if they do ever talk to Apple, I am sure Tim will give them an earful about their disrespect for the platform.
Maybe Square-Enix and other companies not named Blizzard don't have the luxury to spend time AND money to develop a native adaptation of their applications ESPECIALLY when they have to do it AFTER the original windows game was released ...
Blizzard don't do late adaptations, they develop both versions at the same time. That's the key here. And they sell millions of their games, so they can afford to lose some overall profit to waste on developping a Mac version.
I'm not sure Square can yet afford doing so. FYI the mac marketshare is like 5% of the computers used in the world, at most.
The fact that 1/ macs cost double the price for half the performance (cost-wise) and 2/ about 10% max of the games are available on it, heck even emulators work worse on it. both things in the end make it so that people are less inclined in buying a mac for gaming purposes ...
And that's why game developpers don't develop native versions of their game, unless they're called Blizzard.
If you ever wondered why a lot of japanese games don't get released outside of JP.... That's just a translation time and budget thing (for niche games)
Then think about the tiiiiiiiiiiinyyyyyyyyyy mac marketshare and then ask yourself if companies are gonna waste time and money on it for little return on investment?
That's why most games on PC are just wine / wineskin / cider / etc wrappers.
Some are so badly done you can run the games better in Parrallels or VMWare Fusion lol
Or just in Bootcamp (ofc)
I used to be a Mac owner, but the headaches you get to make anything not native work on it made me stay in windows on Bootcamp more often than Mac Os, in the end I felt like paying so much more for just a brand, a computer design, and an OS that I wasn't using anymore was a waste.
Especially since they charge like 100 € for a new A/C adapter when it dies, and it barely lasted 1 year ... Welp everything about Apple is overpriced anyway, since they weren't selling many units (until the avent of iPhones, they were mostly selling iPods, not macs) they had to charge a lot for their products lol
Anyway. You got your Mac version, which in turn is just a bland wrapper (or some 'middleware' apparently) but in the end, since it's not a native version, it's obviously gonna run like crap, since even with a good gaming laptop I barely get 60 fps on windows already ..
it's not with a crappy intel integrated graphics card + opengl + wrapper that this is gonna run above 20 fps lol

So you're saying even with my spec, of 16 gb of ram, a 3.5 ghz i7, and a GTX 780M at 4096 mb of video ram... I should still suffer along at 20 fps? and be grateful that i got a Mac version at all? People with integrated intel graphics are getting the same fps as i am... That tells me this is broken, not tuned at all, not optimized... Bootcamp is not a solution for everyone. My Mother isn't going to buy a windows license to boot her mac into that OS. She wanted to play this... but is going to wait and see if they can possibly fix this mess.
Minor correction: Macs have surpassed 10% of market share as of a couple years ago.
The Mac version of this game is unplayable. I spent money on it hoping for at least some hint of a native port. This is not what I got. I got a wineskin wrapper. I can get those for free. Why again did I spend money on this game? I'll be requesting a refund and ending my subscription, which is sad. But I guess I have World of Warcraft.
Maybe SE will learn. I hope so.
I had a rather long and detail response to this meandering post, but I realized it wouldn't be worth posting. It just repeated the whole "Macs aren't for gaming, Apple is overpriced" that's been thrown around. In the end, it's a fine example of someone letting the details cloud the bigger picture:
* Square announced an OSX client when Heavensward was announced.
* There was no benchmark for the iMac so people could see how well their systems would perform.
* Systems specs were not published until the 25th, 2 days AFTER the expansion was released.
* The performance degradation does not change as the hardware changes.
* People were charged full price for something that performs as well a public beta product.
Square did not deliver. People can sit there and piss in the wind about Apple and iMacs all day, but in the end, Square did not deliver in this case.
Look, I support giving you guys a working client, but when I can upgrade each individual piece of my computer by myself, cheap as dirt and not have to send it somewhere special or risk voiding my warranty, there's definitely a difference there. A definitive one.
And the value of that difference is defined by the individual. Meaning, while you may consider it valuable, other may not.
You can only do that because you built your pc. If you had bought one premade, then you would be in the same boat. The fact of the matter is that we can open up our macs and upgrade components too, but it isn't for amateurs. I don't mind voiding warranties from time to time. Still, not one bit of that matters. The only thing that does matter is that I paid $60 for a mac client that isn't worth $10.
