Devs have already confirmed SMN will be in FFXIV. Search the forums bro, there are many many posts on this topic similar to yours and some specific to how players want the pet class/jobs to play.

Final Fantasy MMO without Summoner, Beastmaster, PUP, or other unused pet clases thus far would be AWFUL.

    Summoner ok, it's standard.
But the others? I don't know. There are many great Final Fantasy without Beatmaster und PUP
    Maybe later in 2 years.

There are hints to pup in the opening CS in Ul'dah. It's just not likely to happen until we get a first expansion.

From my perspective, this would be an enormously frustrating limitation for the game, if it were so. What about Puppetmaster? Or Beastmaster?

What exactly has been officially said about this, if anything at all? Developer, or moderator feedback would be greatly appreciated.

And what does the player-base think about this issue? In case the rumors I've heard are correct, should we start a petition for the inclusion of said class types?

Also, would it be possible for anybody to provide web links to what everybody (but me) seems to know about what the devs have said on this point, please?

Who told you this extremely odd rumors? xD
Read Lodestone BEFORE posting things as this, please.

It's not stupid, it's called balance, which is why even in MMOs with a Pet focus you can only call one. This is why it's good Yoshida is indeed smart.

None of the current storyline specifically says:

"You (player) can become a summoner if you do x, y, z."

they need to pay more attention and look at other FF's in contrast haha
You need to pay more attention to it as well before you go telling other's they need to:

FFIII - You need the power from the crystal and purchase the summoning stones from another world.
FFIV - Summoners were killed off, Rydia survives, there exists a land of summons where she trained. (This nor anything regarding actual summoners beyond "Primals have alligned themselves with the beastkin", meaning they're in their "prime" form and not "avatars" exists in current FFXIV lore, just a bunch of people that can SORT OF issue commands to them.)
FFV - Again, you need power from the crystal.
FFVI - Espers were a tad different, but you need magicite in the end.
    FFVII - Materia.
FFVIII - GFs were generally fought and obtained
    FFIX - Inherited power.
FFX - Heavily linked to the storyline (This is what you call summoner through story and lore)
    FFX-2 - .
FFXI - They're Elemental, Celestial, Terrestial and Temporal gods. You fight them and summon an avatar of them. Story wise, Summoning was made forbidden magic after the great war because of how Fenrir destroyed Windurst and killed it's summoner, the story revolves that you're actually 'secretly taught' the art of summoning because Carbuncle felt you wouldn't have to make the same decision as Kara-Bara."
FFXII - Espers return in a different way.
FFXIII - Heavily linked to the storyline, yet again.
FFXIV - No storyline relation beyond Primals exists. No summoners exists, there's no "The great summoner (name) etc etc" story yet.

Thank god Yoshi is smarter than the majority of this community
    I agree.

he knows how much they're wanted and how easily they fit into the lore lol
You mean when he implements Summoner the storyline/Quest will then be implemented...like it was said? Obviously the story will be extended in order to fit it in, which is what a few people said.

Those Matons are similar to XI's Automata but that's not a hint. They're just little machines programmed to do certain tasks -- PUP originally was supposed to be Necromancer, so instead of undead they created Automata in place for the job's pet.

There is nothing saying they won't be re purposed and made into a pup like job. I honestly don't think a lot of people here really know how fluid like the development teams assigned too mom projects can be. Nothing is ever really set in stone. Everything is subject to change.

i cant wait to see how they interweave the summons into the storyline. my guess is it will have heavy ties to gridania as the horned boy for grids starting CS had hints of summons. as for how they implement this i would like to throw out a few possible solutions.

    Magicite
    - you must fight the summon to earn its respect as part of a specific quest. (company/guild related)
    - every chr has a "Magicite slot" on their weapons as well as the Materia slots
    - for non-summoners and summoners alike, adds elemental bonuses to weapon or stat increaces/special abilities that can be learned
    - Summoner specific allows ability to summon that Primal (can be "learned" so you can summon without it being equipped, learning adds extra bonuses)

    One summon limit
    - Could be good if they make it very specilized
    - ifrit gives bonus to fire res, fire attack bonus, etc
    - Gives you a bunch of other creatures to summon within that Primals "domain" (Ifrit give you fire elemental, flame lizzard, and other fire creature summons, they can gain levels and gain new abilities)
    - allow the ability to change if a new primal comes out or you decide you want a different summon.
    - would require to rebattle the Primal?
    - Lose or retain any extras you gained when you switch then switch back?
    - i think this one, while it could be kewl, has too many "but then's" and is not traditional summoner style. but SE has the creative rights to do whatever the hell they want right?

so far they havent even released ifrit as anything more than a quick CS so i seriously doubt they will add in summons till sometime after the PS3 release when they start adding in content instead of just foundational fixes. it will most likely be part of their first expansion pack, just my guess. but it will be coming.
