It seems pretty open right now in terms of the storyline.
I believe we adventurers with the echo have some power that is shared with the Primals.
Perhaps that link will enable us to summon them in some way or form.

For now lets get ready to kill Ifirit and see where it goes from there.
As far as pets go, I'm looking forward to something else.......

Does anyone actually read the storyline??? Primals can be summoned. And the storyline already tells you that the "player" has the ability to do so.

See the r38 story mission. Read your conversation with Ifrit more carefully.

Well my reason is that their power is touted as being extremely great, Ifrit being as gigantic as he is, and the implication that you can only pledge to one Primal, they would need to do some more elaboration/expansion on the story part in order to make them usable by players. Making you pick only 1 Summon to use sounds pretty interesting, though, and a good way to make players unique among each other. I don't know how it would fly with the rest of the community.

Well, I'm sure that, lorewise, barriers can always be surmounted by means of inspired, creative writing. And so far, the lore-makers seem to have made a pretty consistent world with a captivating history that "makes sense." I'm sure they can find inventive ways of allowing a desired development turn, and at the same time create an interesting turn of events. They are planning new races... they could just as well introduce a hieratic class of summoners, with a practice coming to Eorzea from one of the other lands, even if they're presented as heretical, or criminal. FFXI had a touch of that.

As to the fact that we might need to choose one summon among many, the elemental balance could be reintroduced by means of weaker summons for the other elements, in the manner of the elemental spirits of XI, which would then have more utility (and, feasibly, power) here. Someone mentioned, and it sounded like a great idea, making the guardian deity play some role in summoning too; this could introduce some sort of generalized basic powers, which in some way could compensate (albeit partially) for whatever summon "specialization" made you lack. And so on, and on...

That could be a good idea, especially if they make you level it up (or grow in any form). We had the summoning skill in XI but it could be fun to level the summons separately.

It would be cool if you had to pledge to one primal...and say you could change your pledge through a long/hard quest on a long timer (weeks/months).

LOL, I also miss long/hard quests. Otherwise, I would like either solution... but I agree with you, I do want more challenge in the game. I remember questing to unlock SMN in XI (argh! leeches!) and then dying so many times trying to get the avatars... (/sighs with nostalgia)

This and the fact that the lore DOES allow for smn's ... ignore every1 saying otherwise, they need to pay more attention and look at other FF's in contrast haha

Thank god Yoshi is smarter than the majority of this community :P Hang tough till after job system is implemented. They've been in the planning stages for awhile now... he knows how much they're wanted and how easily they fit into the lore lol

In some way, certain I refuse to say spoiler beasts had the power to "summon" something in the R38 story quest... if that's possible, I can see how summoning can also be possible as a job.

Like others, I came to FFXIV as a summoner from FXI.

They made healing & buffing FUN and had more skills at their disposel than any other class.

Not to mention their powers had to be earnt through trialing battles.

In my opinion there wasn't a more rewarding job.

Although the storyline does imply that the "Primals" are more godlike than anything else, there are loop-holes that would allow SMN to be introduced.

Summoner is a rich lore of final fantasy, as we have been able to summon since Final Fantasy III - Final Fantasy XIII.

It would be a slap in the face to the title to not include this job.
