When has lancer not been the base for a dragoon in ff games? (ie without the jump skills)
Also i find it funny that you mention FF and classes.
Funny because many classes were not part of FF untill game x or y introduced them...
Though, after about 20 some odd years, you have a very, very large bases of classes to pull from without trying to introduce something new. Given that classes in XIV were supposed to be customized", they're all very generic on the Japanese localization, the western localization is where you even see these names.
There was nothing wrong with Black Mage, Red Mage, White Mage, Paladin/Warrior/Berserker/Viking, Dragoon (though it will be linked to XI's cuz of your Wyvern pet), Ranger, Monk/Thief. However it seems some people just simply hate the idea of using anything from FFI-XI (XII/XIII were reintroduction of certain features.)

Weapon Class =/= Job

its an endless arguement
people want the familiar, and some people want something new
both sides will argue endlessly
lets just ignore what the damn classes/jobs are called and just play the game, is what they are named really that important?

I kind of want a new ff game (offline one~) with ninjas xD.Though, after about 20 some odd years, you have a very, very large bases of classes to pull from without trying to introduce something new. Ninjas, summoners, dragoons, paladins, dancer/songstress, engineer/alchemist/magitek user~ weeee
Oooh on that note id love an engineerish class in FFXIV
I dunno Vedis, personally i want my Lancer called Ninja, just because Ninjas are cool :P
The argument is derailing into Class vs. Jobs when it really is Class/Jobs vs. Overhaul removing Classes in favor of Jobs.
Hint, one option gives you both.
I have yet to see someone post that Classes should be the de facto standard. I do see arguments that assume that is what people are asking for but they are making false assumptions and should re-examine their premise prior to posting.
As many poorly supported opinions as there are, I'm still glad there's a discussion.
CON was meant to be the healer, but they are the elemental nuker as well so I see them as WHM/BLM. We have been saying that for awhile, THM resembles RDM and DRK(spells portion only).I think it's so funny when you guys label Thaumaturge as a Black Mage and Conjurer as a White Mage. Banish I and II are White Mage spells but they are in the Thaumaturge arsenal. The flipside to that is the DoT's that the THM currently possesses are BLM spells. The Conjurer has all of the Elemental DoT's and DD spells, Fire, Water etc which are BLM spells. However, CON has the healing spells. THM and CON are a mix of both BLM and WHM together. In their current state they cannot make the name changes unless they move spells around. BLM should have Elemental spells, elemental DoT's, Bio etc. WHM should have your light spells like Dia, Banish, Healing spells and buffs.
I know that things from XI that have been carried over to XIV have made it a smoother game and a lot easier to play. Auto-Attack being one, and now with the crafting system being simplified to closer represent the ingredients that XI's crafting system uses. The only thing that would make me quit XIV is if we are forced back into the Job/Subjob system. Then, it will be just a higher quality XI with small variants like how crafting is done and being able to teleport/return to areas on your own. All of these adjustments and changes to make this game come back alive I'm all in favor for because I really don't want to see this game die; but if this means making it a high graphics clone of XI then there's no point because then the hopes that SE had of people playing both games is almost moot. They'd be close to being the same game, one just looks better. Something has to remain to keep XIV unique and stand apart from XI otherwise it's already failed.Telling us to go play XI instead of them doing what they should have done in the first place (Take what works and made it better) is a death wish on this already dying game. (No one can deny that XIV is on it's death bed and hoping that the PS3 version is what saves it, even SE says the PS3 is their second and final chance.)
Btw, they've been reintroducing some XI concepts..so are you going to quit if they continue to do so? You don't want an XI-2 but Anyia, your Elezen is a replica of one of the unique Elvaans from WoTG with minor aesthetic changes. No one wants a FFXI-2 but guess what most succession MMORPGs have? They have features from their previous MMO either redone, enhanced or overhauled, not scrapped. Lineage I - II didn't scrap much of anything, a lot more of it was enhanced than anything. EQ I > II enhanced a bit (and did some questionable changes). RO > RO2 is up in the air but they didn't scrap the basics like XIV did.
Even WoW took from it's RTS Warcraft series (let alone other MMOs at the time). Change is indeed good, but if what XIV changed was good, would it be banking on a second release to even be worth supporting? Let alone having to be overhauled?
Edit: Correction, I'd just cancel my FFXI account if it came to that. If they end up being so similar to each other then there's no point in playing both. I'd just take the better looking game and call it a day.

I think in the original vision for the game both CON and THM could nuke/heal. This is pre nerfs, pre yoshi-p, it was about letting you choose which mage class you wanted and then choosing how you wanted to play it. I do agree THM was more like an enfeebler lets says with its abilities. Then enfeebles were kinda lame or maybe we weren't used to them at first, and the range was better so people went to THM for healing. It was just a product of how we always take advantage of stuff. Personally I'd like to see the range thing go away (the differences between ranges) have conj be a healer but make enfeebles more potent, actually make them just last longer and less potent. buffs maybe less potent and last 10 mins. But maybe a job system will provide stuff like this :/

...You're trolling, right?
Archer/Lancer were classes in Final Fantasy Tactics. In addition, Lancers in FFT were just a different name for Dragoons. As for Archers, one of the series most iconic characters (Rosa Farrell) uses a bow and has a special bow attack (Aim). She's a White Mage, but she's also an Archer.
The only one that sticks out is Gladiator, I don't think there's been an FF game with one of those.
