Totaly in favour of more masculine highlanders and roes. Midlanders not so much they are too infant-like to me but thats cool and should stay as that. Body hair is not something to be saved for WWF fighters as a previous poster put it - its natural, AND suites a brutal warrior-like man. Heck I'm a girl and have plenty of it and I dont care. :P
I like hairy arms and more a weathered appearance not because its any 'sexier' but because it adds detail to what is otherwise very flat-looking characters in FFXIV, and I dont see why those who prefer shaved have to stop others from getting what they want. Shaved people still have their options. I'd also support (better) freckles, more visible scarring, and dirty roughened hands.

Masculinity is an arbitrary value we humans apply to certain things. It does not exist in nature. Testosterone is not "masculine". Body hair is not "masculine". Again, men are masculine and women are feminine.

You have your terms mixed up. Testosterone and the features that derive from it are masculine, whereas estrogen and the features that derive from it are feminine. Both men and women have both testosterone and estrogen, but to significantly different degrees. And both genders have both masculine and feminine traits. Some women have more masculine traits than others, and some men have more feminine traits than others, but everybody has both to some degree.

If you have more masculine than feminine traits, then that makes you a man. If you have more feminine traits than masculine ones, then you're a woman. It doesn't mean you don't have the other, it just means you have comparatively less of the other. (And if somebody doesn't have a strong prevalence of one type of trait over the other, then that really is a rare edge case, and the person is an androgyne or hermaphrodite. It's extremely uncommon not to have a strong biological tendency towards one over the other, which is why we tend to think people can be classified simply into "men" and "women".)

Facial hair is among the masculine traits that aren't all that uncommon for women to have (though in most cases it's still to a much lesser extent than men). Body hair on the chest or back is a masculine trait that's far more unusual to be present on women (and within some racial groups may be uncommon even on men).

Whether any sort of trait is regarded as attractive or unattractive has a strong societal basis, as well as a significant amount of personal preference involved. Some people regard the somewhat androgynous look of masculine looking women and feminine looking men to be attractive. Others find women with more exaggerated feminine traits or men with more exaggerated masculine traits to be more attractive. But which you find attractive doesn't change which traits are masculine or feminine, at least not when it comes to physical traits. (Of course, when people start describing activities or interests as being "masculine" or "feminine", that's a different story, as those don't come from real biological effects of testosterone or estrogen. Such figurative uses of the terms are entirely societal.)


And to bring in at least a little bit of more on-topic discussion into this post, I think it would be good to offer more facial hair options into the game. (Personally, I'd like some furry-looking body/facial hair options for Miqo'tes.)

How about they implement body hair for males and have a "hide all body hair" option in the settings if seeing body hair really offends you.

And I highly doubt there's enough demand for female body hair to justify it being put in the game.

Its probably due to (ps3) limitations of their systems.

It's seems like they can't get too crazy when it comes to character creator features as can be seen in the fact that Au Ra horns aren't customizable.

Some races would look good with it like male Roes and Highlanders. Others like Elezen (especially we Duskwights) might look odd.

I'm not sure what needs to happen specifically, but yes, we need more "manly-looking" characters. I was hoping the Au Ra would be just that... but I was mistaken :*(

I would love more facial hair options for Miqo'te. As it is, my tom cat barely looks to be out of his adolescence with the facial hair option they have. Would love to have a beard akin to Fabraz of Tales of Aeria.

Agreed. More customization options would add some much needed variety to both players and NPCs. Body hair, muscle tonage, making certain armor's actually reflect a character's bust size, adjustable builds in general, and maybe a few race related ones.
