I don't trick people into anything. If someone decides to start berating someone else for their DPS in DF, I simply ask them to provide specific information. And if they admit to using a parser, I put that into a report for the GMs.

Why is it my responsibility to be delightful toward other players who have shown no willingness to be so themselves?

That's called tricking someone lol XD

Also it's easy to be nice to nice people. It's easy to be mean to mean people. But it's a 2 wrongs don't make a right type situation. Being a jerk to someone for being a jerk first is still being a jerk, and is still bad, just not as bad as being a jerk unprovoked. Not being rude to someone who was rude to you first takes discipline. But it's worth it. It's not necessarily a responsibility that is required of you, but it's still a good thing to do. Think of it as moral extra credit if that helps.

Edit: There's also a big difference between being delightful to someone, and actively trying to get them banned. I'm not asking you to be best friends with every jerk you meet, just don't sink to their level, and for the love of god don't use someone else's misconduct as a reason to justify your own. You are still responsible for your own actions.

Reporting someone for breaking the rules is not being rude. I don't harass them, I don't berate them, and I don't threaten them with "ur totes gonne git BANED". I ask a simple question, then smile and nod while they dig their own grave.

How do you not see that as tricking someone? That's almost a textbook example of how to trick a person. And don't hide behind the ToS to pretend you aren't being rude. You're intentionally going out of your way to make someone elses life worse. Whether or not they were rude first, just take the high road and move on.

Edit: Best possible case this is morally neutral. But you definitely aren't the good guy here.

Or I'm making their life better by teaching them an important lesson about the value of discretion and politeness to strangers.

I don't make internet elitists rage at some newbie in i90. I don't make them swing their epeens around and stroke their parser numbers openly. They walk over that cliff all by themselves.

Yes, because being a school yard tattle tale teaches discretion and manners.

It's also really fun when people get mad at you for it, then get even more mad because they know there's nothing they can do about it.

    Case in point: this thread.

With that logic, it's kind of pointless to report anything.

You aren't and you know you aren't. You're doing it because being self-righteous feels good. It feels good to think you're standing up for the underdog or teaching a lesson to the big bad. But that's not what you're doing and at some level you know it. Because if you've ever been on the other side, if you've ever been the bad guy (and we all have in some situation or another) then you know you don't just "learn a lesson." If anything you just get pissed and take it out on someone. If anything you just make things worse. Wanna teach someone a lesson? Use your words. Tell them the lesson. Don't try to be some puppetmaster, don't try to subtly push them in the direction you think is right. That stuff might work in movies, but in real life it just makes things worse.
