You mean XIII not XII :P
And the engine is definately an issue as it was not developed for mmo-use. The LoD is just horrible and that is the most important gfx engine feature for an mmo.
You know what would be even better? If American PC gamers would realize that SE is a Japanese company and far more people in Japan are interested in and capable of playing an MMO on their home console than a PC, and that SE would fail miserably trying to run a game that didn't cater to their own country's population. Bonus points if they also finally understand that FFXIV specifically is completely doomed without its last chance to regain subscribers with a re-launch for the PS3 after they fix things up.
But at the same time, the game launched on PC FIRST! Not to mention how poorly optimized it is... Why is it that when I'm running Crysis 2 or any other new game for that matter (at full settings) my PC is doing perfectly fine, but as soon as I start playing XIV my videocard starts hauling ass and it sounds like my case is just about ready to explode. You know what would be even better? The problem is not the engine is bad, because it is not, wheres the screenshots of ffxiii with the problems we see in ffxiv?
The engine needs OPTIMISATION for pc, ffxiii shows crystal tools is a modern next gen engine, SE knows it needs optimising and are working on it, but its not like changing a piece of C# code, 1 small change could make the game completly unplayable which is why it takes time, this thread is just one of those expert programmers that happened to suddenly become an expert programmer when the game was released.
Also about the server overhauls, of course SE have the knowladge to do them or the servers would not be there. SE would not outsource the server builds because they need constant maintanance and changes with every patch (for the program) and looking at the physical servers, hardly anyone outsources them now because if there is a failure the server is not your property so you have to wait (loosing money) until somone comes to fix it, because of this it saves money to have an in house server team.
This thread is just full of people that think they know everything, and before anyone asks I have dabbled in programming a bit, and I have a degree in networking so I know about how servers work and what companies do to keep them running.
And, ironically, you just ended being one of those people... No one else in the thread is qualified except you? It's funny how high and mighty some people think they are.
Btw I have a degree in Herp Derpology so I'm the only qualified expert in this thread as far as uncovering herps and derps goes.

Can't really argue with you even if I wanted to. It's the truth as far as I'm concerned :/
If they can get it to a playable level like FFXI then I'll be happy enough to keep playing.
I just have a knowladge of how things work, I arent saying there are no one else that does know what they are talking about, but I can guarentee that most people in this tread talking about engine redesignes and server overhauls got thier information off wikipiedia, then came in here.
If i worked for SE on the servers and network infrastructure I would launch a range of network monetoring software to find the bottlenecks in both the routed infrastructure and servers to suggest upgrades or changes to protocols that are used to increase performance of they systems, for example if one router is nearing its limits and another is barely used, why is that?, so I would change the cost of the interfaces so the routers would load balance better, I would store configs on a tftp server so when devices were changed it would take less than a minute to configure them.
Lets see suggestions from all the other "experts" in this thread rather than saying that everything is crap, lets help SE fix it is everyone is apparently experts.
My suggestion could reduce latency hugely if devices arent properly load ballancing for some reason.
Yeah sure, I can really see that happening. I'm sure all they can think of at the SE offices is to check the forums for help on how to manage their servers.
Do you have any idea how unbelivably naive that sounds? They know what they could do, they're just not doing it fast enough.
They also know these problems exist and are trying to fix them, do you think they constantly need it ramming down thier throats? if you want the engine and server changes fast you can enjoy playing you unplayable game because they had to botch the core of the game which is alot bigger than most people on these forums could even contemplate.Yeah sure, I can really see that happening. You have no idea how much you could do with a server, there could be configs the devs didnt think of that will increase performance of the game, these forums could be really good for the server and network engineers at SE because they have a chance to potentially get suggestions from people that work in the business, and it would allow them to get feedback, they wouldnt normally get.
Yes they may not listen but of we give suggestions then its SE's fault, however if we dont offer anything SE can say they were expecting feedback from the players on possible changes and they could look into them.
These forums were made so we have communication with the devs, but most people dont wanna offer any suggestions then complain the devs didnt do what they want, this thread is the same, while the problems are there which I wont deny, if there that bad, the help the devs change it, if you know whats wrong with the engine and network, offer suggestions, if they dont listen then its thier fault, and the community reps have access to everyone thats involved in the game so they can pass any suggestions on.
