I think the words you are looking for are: Trick Attack.Filtering to only show your own debuffs would work for most people most of the time, but there are situations where, for example, a WAR or NIN would want to be aware of the other one using their slashing resistance debuff, or BLMs looking for Foe's requiem, or some other synergistic debuffs.
It wasn't discovered, it was listed in the 2.1 patch notes when they bumped the debuff limit from 30 to 60:
This is one of the things I hope they address in 3.0 because it's maddening losing track of your debuffs in 24+ player content.
- The maximum number of statuses that can be inflicted upon notorious monsters and dungeon bosses has been raised to 60.
* Please note, however, that only 30 will be visible under the target bar.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.
Isn't the default position for your debuffs to be the first in the list? I'm pretty sure I haven't changed any settings for this, and all of my debuffs are always first in the list with green numbers to mark them, even when the boss bar is already full. I know there are some debuffs that don't stack and only the most recent application from any given character shows, ex: Disembowel from DRG, but even then all of the DoTs should stack.
I so desperately want separate buff and debuff bars.
I believe there is also a limit of how many of the same debuff can be on the boss at 5. So if there are more then 5 bards, some of them will be missing on their venomous bite/windbite dots. Only way to ensure your dot stays on is to reapply it before it runs out in zerg content.
If your debuff is the 31+ one applied it won't show up, even if you have it toggled to display only your own debuffs. Now if your debuff is one of first 30 applied it will remain visible no matter how many other debuffs are applied so long as you keep it refreshed. However, if you let it expire and something else takes its place before you reapply it it'll become hidden. There's also the issue of the hidden 31-60 debuffs remaining hidden unless you let them expire and reapply them even if there's room for them to be displayed.
With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.
Yeah, I noticed this when Labyrinth first came out. I wish the game would let you see your own personal debuffs/DoTs on a boss by overriding (but not removing, of course) the amount necessary when the debuff/dot slots are capped on a boss with yours.
You CAN set it so you can only see your own debuffs/ dots, but it's a waste of DPS refreshing Dragon Kick, Storm's Eye, or Dancing Edge if someone else already has them up :/
As far as I know this option also removes helpful debuff icons, such as trick attack, foes, etc.
It really doesn't make any sense how the current system works. It should always show your own debuffs first and it's that simple. The biggest problem is that your own dots don't take display priority, which is stupid.
I hope this isn't true. If so, every SMN beyond the fifth in a raid is, essentially, a waste of space. DoTs are pretty much how SMN does the bulk of their damage. This gets even worse when you factor in SCHs applying their own DoTs (and worse still for those bad SCH who never leveled WHM for Cleric's Stance, or are too lazy to put it up).I believe there is also a limit of how many of the same debuff can be on the boss at 5. So if there are more then 5 bards, some of them will be missing on their venomous bite/windbite dots. Only way to ensure your dot stays on is to reapply it before it runs out in zerg content.
Given the amount of Aeros I've seen at once on Hunt mobs, I would assume no such limit. It's just whoever gets the first 60 in.
