HeavensWard theme song lyrics:
-"We can [Stance]dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don't [Stance]dance
And if they don't [Stance]dance
Well they're no friends of mine"
This just made me angry all over... I hope they salvage the story with the expansion because 2.55 was just so awful that it was infuriating! To force a player to just be a bystander and watch as his/her character runs out on all the NPCs that he'd/she'd previously worked so hard to save on many a occasion is one of the most frustrating story experiences I've had in a game. It's just terrible writing, plain and simple. There's no defending it. It was sloppy. Especially the whole situation with Raubahn.
That was story telling through mechanics, giving you a feeling of lack of agency and frustration and eagerness to fight back (hard!) when you get your first chance. They're trying to make you feel like your character. This just made me angry all over... I hope they salvage the story with the expansion because 2.55 was just so awful that it was infuriating! It could definitely have been better done though. For instance, the Scions could have been firmer in insisting we go, rather than just assuming we would and us just going along with it. The force used against us really needed a lot more power behind it to warrant our escape in the first place. Although the player character is clearly a goody two shoes (obeying every fetch quest known to man at the slightest request) and they may not like fighting the city guard for doing their job, we have fought the corrupt Brass Blades before I'm pretty sure. Maybe they just put our reactions down to shock at the death + accusations + betrayals, etc. I don't really think it was well conveyed though.
It comes up a lot that it was poor writing because we just ran away, but the point of the narrative was that we were pretty powerless. Not physically. We could have slaughtered endless guards. We might even have been able to kill all the Monetarists. But if we had tried to solve that situation by brute force there was no way for it to end in our favour.
Its supposed to be frustrating. That's the point. They want is to want justice and vengeance against the Monetarists. Because of this when we come for them and bring their plans crashing down it will be all the more satisfying. This isn't the first time this has been done in the narrative. The same thing happened back when the Garleans attacked the Scions. Again, we were pretty powerless. It in many ways made the fight vs the Garleans personal.
I actually think it was good writing. Narrative which is just the hero going from one set of bad guys to another beating them up is pretty average writing in my book. The fact that in the story we really have to struggle and often seem to be losing the war I think just makes it more heroic when we overcome and come out on top.

If you've played 1.0, you'd know he's practically the mascot of the series. In 1.0, you see him as a archer with his collegues and then he becomes a warrior and then finally a dragoon. It's a player's arc through out the world. I personally like seeing him in the trailers!
