I could see him being A boss but not likely the final boss. and him keeping in contact with Uriangier to help manipulate things in his favour and also make his fellow Ascians fall in the process would definitely fall into this.
Elidibus will be the final boss. However there will be two main phases:

Phase 1) We fight Elidibus as we see him now.
Phase 2) We fight Elidibus who is now fused with Zodiark (he basically turns into some crazy monster deity) which requires Hydaelyn to step in and help.

Its all very classic JRPG and FF.

Well, as awesome as this story was. There's a lot of story to guess as we head into Ishgard.

My guess is we'll fight Lahabrea some point near the end of 3.0, killing him like we did Nabriales. And as for Eldibus, that's probably not going to happen till the end of 3.xx's story.

I don't think we will see the end of the Ascians in 3.xx. Assuming we are going North (Ishgard) and North West (Sharlayan) we still have the Ala Mhigo front to explore, the Ascians are very deeply tied to the Eorzean land, so if we don't end up traversing the North East I don't think we will kill all the Ascians. That being said I bet we will see additional Ascians come and go just like Nabriales. And come next expansion (assuming again we don't visit the North East) we will finish them all off in the 4.xx series as well as completely uncover the areas of Eorzea.

Then in 5.xx we go to a new continent.

Don't be sillly, Hydaelyn will be unable to do anything during Phase 2. Instead we'll be chipping away at the boss while a Circle of Friendship combined with Clap Your Hands If You Believe moment will be happening with text popups of people we've met on our journey will say something, either healing us or destroying part of the boss's magical defenses. The entire thing will end with us gathering all the beliefs and power, and we will become a temporary Elder Primal in a final cutscene, where we cut him down for good.

Well I'd say the Ascians are more or less tied to the past of the whole planet, not just Eorzea. I think the only storyline when we'll be free of their machinations is going to be when we fly to the moon. Yoshida did mention once that he'd like to do it. I'm also sure we will get more Ascians. After all 1.0 only had Travanchet and a few grim reaper like Ascians. These new, masked types debuted in ARR, so that's 3 new Ascians. I don't have any of the cutscenes at hand to prove it, but FF wiki has the names of four more Ascians, one of which might very well be female. Meaning, we have a lot more of them to kill than just Lahabrea and Elidibus.

There are actually 13 (if you include the Emissary) Ascians. They correspond to the Scions of Light from the Ivalice lore, each having dealt with a Scion of Darkness (the beasts). The glyphs on each of the Ascians faces are even a portion of the gylph you see when you find a new summon in FFXII . That being said SE has already stated that Ivalice is its own world, which is fair in its own right but that doesn't mean that the worlds cannot draw similarities. There is a thread in the lore section that talks about this in more detail and you can find it here: LINK.

    Elidibus (Emissary) - Zodiark
    Lahabrea - Mateus
    Pashtarot - Zeromus
    Igeyorhm - Shemhazai
    Altima - Ultima
    Emmerololth - Famfrit
    Nabriales - Cúchulainn

    Likely Members
Loghrif - Belias (He is seen in the SMN Quest line, although they do not name him, his glyph matches Belias and he gives the Dark Summoner the power to summon Belias-egi)
    Mitron - Chaos
    Emet-Selch - Zalera
    Fandaniel - Hashmal
    Halmarut - Exodus
    Deudalaphon - Adrammelech

I'm grasping at straws here but... some things just don't add up for me how everything went down.

I'm very suspicious of the Sultana's death. She confided in the Warrior of Light as if she KNEW she was about to disappear off the face of the earth. "I need you to take care of Raubahn." Why wouldn't she be able to help support him, if she was going to be there herself? I'm thinking that she was scheming behind the scenes herself, out maneuvering the monetarists. I would not be shocked if she pulled a Princess Ashe and is hiding behind the scenes to come back and take out the revealed traitors. I doubt this, but still wonder, if there was a bit of Sylph "skin-changing" magic going on. We've seen that the Sylphs can turn into humans in a few quests - it is unlikely but I'm wondering if everyone who was in the palace was actually themselves. We had a few quests in Ul'Dah which featured this magic.

I'm also really curious if they're going to use the primal, Phoenix as part of the main story. The dev. team are trying to get more players into the Coil, and the cut scene featuring Phoenix was pretty elaborate for only a handful of people to see. They may be hoping more people know about it in order to draw some conclusions about what is happening in the main story. Alisaie being out of the coil and in the Waking Sands with Urianger - who was in contact with Tataru - makes me wonder if some info was passed between them and the primal summoned to assist the Scions / Sultana. Or maybe its just wishful thinking on my part. I just don't want them all to be dead.

Something dawned on me doing story DR today.

Ilberd and Gaius Van Baelsar hold their swords in exactly the same way. Did SE recycle animations or is this going to come up as part of all this later?

Actually decided to look into it further, and they have the same voice actor. Looking at other footage on youtube Gaius seems to be of highlander build when compared to midlanders like Yda and Thancred. The hand sliding down the blade to throw an energy wave attack is the exact stance Gaius stands in before being engaged in Praetorium. I'm starting to think Gaius' dream of Eorzean conquest didn't end in the inferno that consumed Ultima.
