Well I can tell you this much, and this is my theory.
Urianger is P***Ywhipped and ever since moenwhatever died, he couldn't handle it and became vulnerable so that the ascians can manipulate him, that's why they're targeting him.
(Probably using a "we can bring her back" plot device, I hate plot device characters...)
It's no different than when Thancred overexerted himself and started beating himself up about being useless that caused him to be possessed.

to me Elidibus didn't seem all that surprised or humbled. one would think knowing that we now have the knowledge to actually kill them would put fear into him but it doesn't seem to.
while this is the obvious thing I don't think that is what happened. see I think Elidibus has been in contact with Urianger since around the first time we saw him and has been planting clues to help us. but again it's all theory and we will have to wait and seeWell I can tell you this much, and this is my theory.

Urianger and Elidibus are both pretty odd. It is a proven fact that with Minfilia, Elidibus and Tataru in the same room, Ttaaru was oblivious to Elidibus's present. Wether his invisibility is tied to the echo is unknown. But he does seem to know a lot about the Echo. It is blatantly obvious that Elidibus and Lahabrea have different plans. Hell even Lahabrea, Elidibus and Nabriales have 3 different plans. Still, I think Elidibus being a good guy is pushing it too far. Of course many twists used by SE were obvious but the only white robed guy in a cult of black robed guys(by the by: where are the ascian chicks?!) being secretly good is frankly childish. He is not as antagonistic as the others but I have no illusions regarding his evilness.
On a different note. I updated my in character blog with the events of patch 2.55. I mixed in the postmoogle quests, a recent Odin sighting on Phoenix and my own personal vampire hunter RP story to the main scenario, but I tried my best to remain fatefull to the original plot and give an account that makes sense of the player's passivity.

the last 7 entries detail the 2.55 storyline.

Heavensward conjecture, current MS spoiler
Nanamo isn't dead. No way. Lolorito is really a nice guy, and worked in secret with Nanamo to stage her death. Throne abdication successful. Some minor collateral damage though. Please look forward to her future return!!

...or, she had her suspicions that stuff was about to go down, knows her own personal reputation in Ul'dah is sterling and knows that she could very well defend us/explain under no uncertain terms to folk if asked 'the vial was empty before the the WoL even entered the Sultana's chambers/was found outside the city' as we told Momodi (if I remember correctly) what we had just experienced. Momodi likely knew events were about to happen she couldn't stop....but she CAN/likely will use her reputation and influence to set what she can right.
From the first time I saw Elidibus, he gave off the aura of a manipulator, having no love for his fellow Ascians, and even does things behind their backs. He could very well be manipulating everything and be the true final boss of FFXIV, simply moving everything to a conclusion he wants.

well him helping us to manipulate his own agenda into action wouldn't make him a good guy and this is one of the many possibilities.
I could see him being A boss but not likely the final boss. and him keeping in contact with Uriangier to help manipulate things in his favour and also make his fellow Ascians fall in the process would definitely fall into this. From the first time I saw Elidibus, he gave off the aura of a manipulator, having no love for his fellow Ascians, and even does things behind their backs. I kinda get that feeling about Lahabrea. I don't think Elidibus truly cares for the Scions and I don't think he is a "good guy" but I don't think he cares for the Ascians either and is willing to let the Scions do as they please, possibly giving them information. On the other hand, I see Lahabrea as a bad guy who, while he doesn't care much for the other Ascians, he doesn't care much for the Scions either and would probably be happy to be rid of both the Scions and any Ascian who stands against him. I think he basically wants to resurrect Zodiark and be his second-in-command or something. I don't think Elidibus gives a rip about Zodiark. From the first time I saw Elidibus, he gave off the aura of a manipulator, having no love for his fellow Ascians, and even does things behind their backs. To be honest, I kinda wish we could get Ascian robes. Like the standard black robes for BLM/SMN and the white robes for WHM/SCH/AST.
EDIT: Here's a thought; Ascians believed they were immortal, meaning that Ascians probably couldn't kill Ascians. Maybe Elidibus wants the other Ascians dead.
