Some people have said that others might react rudely to a compliment because they feel awkward or want the situation to go away. Meaning the compliment made you very uncomfortable. I am having a hard time empathizing with that emotion. If anyone takes the time to compliment me, I never take it as a come on. Actually, makes me really happy! I'm all like "Why thank you!"! And I've also never had any stalker related issues arise from other people complimenting me. I know some people are afraid of that but really, is that fear justified? As a female irl, I have never really had an issue with people trying to "stalk" me like I hear other girls going on about. I also have several girls in my FC that have never had any issues with this. So in my small microcosm of people I associate with, a compliment is just a compliment and not meant to offend in any other way.

But I can see where some of you are coming from if the person I complimented was in an unstable relationship. But really, come on now! The girlfriend is watching and sees someone say that their boyfriends AVATAR is cute and gets pissed? If that is the case, might need to reevaluate that relationship! Also, it's a random duty finder! People that will most likely never meet again. I know one person mentioned cross-server stalking or something but if that happened, I would welcome them to my blacklist and report if need (though has previously mentioned that has never happened).

And for all I know, he could have just been joking or sarcastic and it just didn't come through over the interwebs very well.

Compliments are just that: a compliment. Personally, I really enjoy when someone says something nice to me. I put time and effort into my character's physical appearance and glamours, so it's nice when someone recognizes you for it. I shudder to think how some people would react if someone in life away from the game said, "Hey, you look nice today!"

Here's a helpful tip: you say, "Thank you!" or "That's really nice of you, thanks!" and move on. Why must everyone always read into everything?

The world is full of all types of people and personalities. Not everyone thinks the same. As we see here a mixed bag of responses from various folks. From the over analyzed gamer types, to the simple "it was probably a joke".

Some people don't like compliments it makes them feel uneasy and awkward, just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. We come from all walks of life, background and upbringing. What one person takes a compliment some could take it as insult. Without actual voice chat in most situations on the game it is very difficult to discern someones tone, manor, or meaning. We are not all the same person.

I'm not saying that was the situation, just pointing out the diversity of people and personalities that play this game, and how interpretation is dealt with.

Voice changing options can reduce the usefulness of voice chat in this regard. Besides, for me, my brain hates the thought of *my* voice issuing forth from my character, it simply doesn't work for me, so I prefer to stick to text.
