This aesthetic is drastically different from and potentially off-putting to someone who buys into the whole "gotta be swole bra" dude-bro image of ideal masculinity that is somewhat pervasive in Western/American culture.

TBH, I think that's it. Even having the option of moving away from that ideal, which many western games do not give you, makes the game effeminate by those standards. Personally, I'm sick of it and I'm glad that XIV actually gives options. Highlanders and Roes for those that want the whole buff dude-bro thing.

In FFXI there was a Little Ladies Day equivalent but there was--and I cannot remember the name of the event to save me--where it was basically a Little Boys Day...it was with the Samurai sword stuff.

I'm gonna have to agree with you here... Amano is one of my favorite artists.
I was so exited when they let us get Setzer's outfit. I think we need more Amano-designed outfits in this game.

Well, without going into gender politics, history or any other such real-world issues lets put it this way.

The OP's nephew's are turned off by this game because in their minds, right or wrong, this game is GIRLIE.
Meaning that these young lads see being 'girlie' as a bad thing. So if women have it so good, why is being 'like women (or girls)' demeaning/not interesting to these young men?

Oh that's right...because in their own way, they are still showcasing that being female (or having female qualities) still in 2015 makes you somehow 'lesser'

I'm not really sure if that is the issue. If they were in their later teens or early 20s and had this line of thought, then yes its bad. But I doubt they are that old, they are probably 13 at most, and in that case I'm guessing it's more about peer pressure and fitting in over actually viewing girlie as bad. Remember, this is the same demographic that liked The Legend of Korra.

The Little Ladies Day event is actually supposed to be a counterpart to the Valentiones Day event, which in Japan is a "male specific" holiday.

I think you mean it's analogous to Hina Matsuri or "Dolls day" (or "Girls day"), which is not a counterpart to valentines day and is an entirely Japanese cultural event.

Valentines day in Japan is about females expressing their feelings to males (or whoever they are interested in) along with chocolates. White day (a Japanese creation) is about men reciprocating with a gift - also of chocolate. Valentiones day in Eorzea seems to be a hybrid of both given the presence of both a regular chocolate and a *white* chocolate.

Now I will say girls do have more outfit options, which isn't fair.

I'd suggest showing them some of the other gear/items in game. How can you call this game gender biased? Aside from a handful of gender locked items (fine by me) it's very neutral in my opinion.
