Personally I think this game is still pretty male-gazey in the aesthetics department... I mean, it sure is a lot better than lots of other games out there, though still has some problems (I'm still mad about the female AF dragoon armor). Though we could do with some more buff girls and girly men to be honest.

Honestly I think it's hilarious when people get mad about bikini tanks. I mean, deal with it... if I can stand to look at people dress their female miqo'te in a bra and panties and walk around like no big deal, I should be able to have my character show off his bulge.

    Just. saying.

    Um sorry.
Do I think the game is too feminine? No. Girl's Day is a real holiday in Japan, that's what's being celebrated. Explain it to your nephews.

Indeed, since most other games lean towards the masculine end of the spectrum. I have to say though that the Highlander males, Roegadyn males, and some Miq'ote males manage to pull off a pretty masculine look. It's not like the armor in this game is feminine either. Good grief, there is armor that gives female characters a six-pack that Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been proud of in his prime.

I see no reason to care for boys that think too much femininity is a bad thing.

RL gender politics aside, I personally do not feel that FF14 is "too feminine", although I could see how a young male in modern western culture could see it as such.

Final Fantasy as a series has always had a very stylized and flamboyant aesthetic to it, which I personally like. This aesthetic is drastically different from and potentially off-putting to someone who buys into the whole "gotta be swole bra" dude-bro image of ideal masculinity that is somewhat pervasive in Western/American culture.

My suggestion is, as others have said, educate your nephew on what else the game has to offer and show him that there are definitely alternatives to the "feminine" aspects that he dislikes. If that doesn't work, then oh well the game is just not for him.

Is this seriously a concern? This is the epitome of stupidity.

Either that or youthful inexperience and a different cultural bias to that from which the game springs.

I think it's important to point out that androgynous male characters were a part of Final Fantasy before it took on anime aesthetics in the move to 3D. Yoshitaka Amano's thing was and will always be extremely well-built girly men in FABULOUS heavy armor. Just accept that this is a series where your wires will be crossed sooner or later.

Were going to have an event where we have giant dragons, a Gun class, a Dark Knight, and riding dragons around giant castles in a gritty environment.

    Still too feminine?

Well, without going into gender politics, history or any other such real-world issues lets put it this way.

The OP's nephew's are turned off by this game because in their minds, right or wrong, this game is GIRLIE.
Meaning that these young lads see being 'girlie' as a bad thing. So if women have it so good, why is being 'like women (or girls)' demeaning/not interesting to these young men?

Oh that's right...because in their own way, they are still showcasing that being female (or having female qualities) still in 2015 makes you somehow 'lesser'

Are we going a bit too far in the aesthetics department of design as of late in this depiction that would cause a lot of male players not to even try this game?
I think a question every one missed is, how old are your nephews? I would assume you are in your mid 20s or older, meaning you nephews could be 13 at best. Some children tend to focus on one aspect of a gender and view anything else as the other gender. Honestly, if you want them to try the game more, just give it time. Young children are usually hesitant to try something that does fit within their "current" world view.

The Little Ladies Day event is actually supposed to be a counterpart to the Valentiones Day event, which in Japan is a "male specific" holiday. Which in real life the actual counterpart is White Day. Though I will say the Valentiones Day event felt more mixed or female based; though how to make it more male based is beyond me, since the event did exactly what the real life counterpart does, having girls give homemade gifts (usually chocolate) to boys.

What the game need are NPCs swearing around while drinking beer and watching dancers in the miner guild after a hard work day.
As stated above White Day is actually a girl centric holiday.

And as for the swearing, drinking, and stuff, I think the game does that in equal measures. Though having girls stare at male dancers might be nice, lol.

And, as a boy, no we do not get all of the other days. Every Country and Culture is different, and most modern ones strive for equality accross the board, without pushing too far in the other direction. And while I like the Little Ladies Day event; though the reward?, Anyway, though I like it I do wish there was an event geared more towards guys. But, then again, I'm not a "stereotypical" guy, so most thing other might find "manly" I'd probably hate. Similar to the Valentiones Day event, I knew it was "supposed" to be geared towards guys, but it had a more feminine feel to me.

Now I will say girls do have more outfit options, which isn't fair.

I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.
