This is an outright lie.

How do you know this is an outright lie? There are COUNTLESS things in the game that are obviously crafted, but that crafters aren't able to craft. Culinarians don't have a recipe for anything that uses shark slices, but that doesn't mean it's not a popular cuisine among NPCs.

I'm aware of the cruelty of shark finning. I find it rather admirable that SE actually acknowledged this abuse in-game, by including this line of text to assure crafters that they are NOT abusive animal-torturers, unlike real-life shark harvesters, and that the whole shark is put to good use in Eorzea even if the same would not be true in real life.

If SE was as callous as you say, they would have said nothing at all on the topic - or if they REALLY wanted to promote shark finning include some rhetoric that tries to justify the cruel practice. Instead, Eorzea is a beautiful place where nature is respected and when the shark is slaughtered for its fin, the rest of the carcass is put to good use as well. Quite fitting for a fantasy world.

You may be correct in that there is a political message here - but I think you're vastly mistaken about the intent of that message. To me, the text seems like a scathing criticism of real-life finning, not an endorsement or an attempt to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

Thank you for reading the whole post instead of just making ridiculous assumptions. What you say is possible. But I think including the item then feeling the need to justify it by claiming shark meat is widely used is very interesting. And if this wasn't a common misconception IRL then I'd probably dismiss it too.

I'm fairly certain this is what anyone would think given the renowned work of the localization team. Or the fact that the game takes place in a fictional setting, so Shark Fin Soup could potentially taste savory in this fictionalized environment as opposed to reality.
