Bahamut was an ancient and powerful Meracydian, to whom the dragons prayed to to return to them when the Allagans came to conquer. Go re-watch the pre-T12 cutscene; Lou says that Bahamut was one of their first ancestors or something (I'm not logged in, so can't get the quote myself).

Whether he is one of Mid's children, I don't know, but it is a possibility
