I'm guessing FFXIV is your frist MMO, because the summoner is not a "green mage" from the Tactics series. A mage that has a pet and casts DoT spells is a rather old archetype. To my knowledge, the first incarnation of this was Everquest's necromancer class, but I am sure if you go back to MUDs, you will find similar classes. What I find humorous is the "really" quote. There is a long discussion in the DPS forums that basically state what people want is the FFXI summoner, because summons have traditionally been short term allies (FFX, FFXII, and FFXIII) or glorified casting animations (most console RPGS). Well, if you want a FFXI summoner, go play FFXI. Classes that rely heavily on pets for damage have all sorts of fun balance and mechanics issues (like, when the pet is dead, the player is useless). Also, it was stated the designers wanted the player to be the active agent in the game, not the player's pet, so the fact that pets are secondary is intentional. I could see the summoner class be slightly reworked to be like a Demonology warlock from WoW, but people who think the developers are going to port over the FFXI summoner don't understand game design.
