I'm guessing FFXIV is your frist MMO, because the summoner is not a "green mage" from the Tactics series. A mage that has a pet and casts DoT spells is a rather old archetype. To my knowledge, the first incarnation of this was Everquest's necromancer class, but I am sure if you go back to MUDs, you will find similar classes. What I find humorous is the "really" quote. There is a long discussion in the DPS forums that basically state what people want is the FFXI summoner, because summons have traditionally been short term allies (FFX, FFXII, and FFXIII) or glorified casting animations (most console RPGS). Well, if you want a FFXI summoner, go play FFXI. Classes that rely heavily on pets for damage have all sorts of fun balance and mechanics issues (like, when the pet is dead, the player is useless). Also, it was stated the designers wanted the player to be the active agent in the game, not the player's pet, so the fact that pets are secondary is intentional. I could see the summoner class be slightly reworked to be like a Demonology warlock from WoW, but people who think the developers are going to port over the FFXI summoner don't understand game design.
The Summoner already has fun balance and mechanics issues even with DoTs as the main source of damage. Summoner's are supposed to be sustained dps but we aren't our damage starts out high then sharply declines to it's minimum potential and sits there. Black Mage is more sustained then us because their damage alternates between they plateau at their max value. Monks build up there damage over time and alternate between their min and max values. Summoner is just garbage when it comes to high end game raiding right now. DoT for Summoner stands for Diminishing Over Time.

You keep saying this but how is it dropping? To my knowledge the game doesn't have diminishing returns after a set time so DoT potency should remain the same.

Because Mana, because in FCoB for example where you need to push your DPS as much as possible, SMNs will go OOM very fast due to needing to use Fester to actually try and get decent numbers, so Aetherflow for mana regen ticks is very limited compared to SCH who can sit on aetherflow stacks a lot easier. Also no AF stacks=no Fester so your DPS will drop during that time.

SMN DPS using dots and ruin spam is consistently, problem is, it's constistently low in comparison to other classes due to mana issues (albeit we will never have 100% true figures until individual dot tick damage is displayed in the combat log).

SMN could do with either a dot that drains mana to the caster, a pet HP sacrifice, sacrife xx% pets HP that converts into caster mana.

Our long term SMN changed to BLM because he knew he would be more useful as BLM in FCoB than SMN. Something that shouldn't need to happen.

Thanks for explaining. Akiza made it sound like DoTs lost potency instead of a mana issue. I think we need gear set that is different from BLM and change Enhanced Pet Actions from 20% spell speed to 10% mp restore over 8s. The Pet Hp Siphon is a good idea too. Maybe an Enhanced Energy Siphon II or Enhanced Aetherflow.

I'm not on FCoB yet, but why? Why switch jobs if you can already clear the fight as a Smn? And what does "useful" mean? I'm not part of a static, and what goes on in statics seem like it's another world.

    Simple reasons

BLM do more DPS over long fights due to unlimited mana XD Foe Req is more effective with BLM than SMN pushing them even more, plus their burst is higher and more consistent on demand for add phases than SMN. (I wont go into specifics to not put spoilers.)

Also we were struggling to clear, like sub 5% wipes due to enrage until he switched to BLM which gave us that extra DPS to get the clear.
