Discuss: Are DPS meters bad for MMOs?

Reason why people should not have a program like this due to the fact you have people who miss use it.

Going by that logic, people shouldn't get to play online video games either because some people misuse them.

But this is not what Hayward is saying. Yes , people are going to be assholes. What he is saying is why give them another tool to harass with? Thats like saying thieves are always going to be thieves, but lets give them full access to bank info, vault codes, account info, etc. Yes they are gonna steal regardless, but you wouldn't want it to be ok for a thief to have your personal information. I understand why people are worried.

Parsers are not "tools to harass people with". They are measurement tools and nothing else. Your analogy is quite poor. How about an analogy of a guy in the sauna with a ruler. You know...measuring things and harassing people over it. He'd be imprisoned within a few moments. Just like it would be in this game. Actually I feel like a genius for this comparison. That's totally it!

I like to believe that FFXIV has a superior well mannered community than past mmo's ive played but thats simply not the case.

When i was playing BC and WotLK in WoW no one ever handed out sh*t for being low on the parse chart. Only thing being handed out were praises for having high dps/hps and "im going to beat you next round." "bring it nub." and thats the end of it

Here in FFXIV more often than not, theres always someone that has to have their world revolve around a 3rd-party parser and hand out sh*t.

I believe in using a parser to self-improve and to see if you are up to par. Harmless jests are fine but don't give someone sh*t over a parser.

you're not very smart are you? you don't try to compare two things that aren't comparable. also it fails on many different levels. as thieves have access to everything they need to harass others. why? because it's dumb to ban things because a few people might misuse them. all a thief needs to steal information is the internet. can you guess why the internet isn't banned? lol

As many have said a parser is a tool.

Take a hammer for example, it can be used to build or to destroy. That doesn't make a hammer bad.

Ryel, I feel like im stuck in an episode of The Twilight Zone. The words you put in bold are all synonyms of each other. But read the very first definition you posted for analogy. That is what i was doing. giving an analogy. An analogy doesn't have to involve things that only you agree are similar in weight or what your opinion of the subjects of the analogy are. Lets look at one of my analogies. Parser is to Harasser as is Knife is to Murderer. Parser=tool Knife=tool. Used by Harasser=bad person Murderer=bad person. Now yes, Parser=you Knife=cook. both are good people using the tools for the intended purpose. But im not comparing the good. Im comparing that parsers in the wrong hands can cause harm(harasser), not just bodily, the same as knife in wrong hand(murderer). That is an analogy. Finding similarity in items even if the initial similarities are not as black and white. I think you think I'm attacking parsers, I'm actually attacking idiots that use it to harass people.

Umm, you can compare anything if you can find similarities. Once again, Im comparing the effect of the Parser being used in the wrong way as being similar to the effect of other tools being used the wrong way. Thats all im saying. Now its people like you that think because it affects you a certain way that its the only way it can affect all people. For example, we have this thing now where bullies are teasing people so much that they feel like they should end their life to get away from it. Do you tell people being bullied to "get over it" because you got over it? Not everyone responds to the same level of bullying(or harassment) as others. For some, its just annoying, for others its worse. Thats all im saying. Please tell me someone understands what im saying?

And im not even on the parser thing anymore, im just aggravated that Im having a hard time explaining what an analogy means to people more so than this Parser thing. lol. Lol. Thx because you have hit the nail on the head. Guy in sauna with ruler(tool used for measuring) harasses people using said ruler(maybe hitting people or walking up to them trying to measure their junk). Now, guy would be arrested. He harassed people. But guess what? If he used said ruler in the incident as a means of harassing the people, guess what? In this case Parser:Harasser :: Ruler:This sauna guy. ...........my head hurts. lol
