You DO know it's not a PART of FFXIV, don't you? It's going to be free via the Square Enix Portal App, and will link up with FFXIV. Meaning you do not need FFXIV to play it, for it is a standalone app.

And due to that will have booster packs which cost.

Well they had to spend money to develop the app, so in-game purchases to cover the costs of a free game and generate revenue after the fact is a decent business model. I don't think it's exactly the same as a lot of the arguments seen lately about the cash shop situation though, since the P2P factor is non-existent for this app.

I think a lot of people on the forums didn't know about it being a stand alone app as well and thus the complaints about it. Its how free cell phone games make their money with in app purchases, its the nature of the beast. If you don't know how cell phone apps work and make their money you should go watch the southpark episode "Freemium isn't Free" They know only around 3-5% of the people who download the game will make a purchase but that is still enough to make a profit and cover their dev costs.

There's likely going to be as the OP said, a link between the two. Card transfer or some other level of data interactivity that allows purchases on the app to transfer to XIV for example.

Thats what I'm replying too. The way he is wording it, its focus is like another Hearthstone, which given on the info until now, is not. The app was the outside source, not the other way around.

I'm not talking about the app side, but the ffxiv side. Free app = pay for cards, whatever, I don't care. But in ffxiv, yes, we SHOULD be able to battle NPCs for cards.

Oh well, still disappointing. Wonder if the other minigames we were looking forward to will involve money somehow as well.
