People don't get it. They aren't top DPS because they can act as a back up tanks. Aswell as titan can in a pinch.

Because of this utility they don't get top tier DPS.

As for all the LOL DRG dead screen shot. lots of DRG Play stupid because if this extra defense, vs playing smart and moving.

Tested it with WAR without defiance, and over the long haul PLD pushes ahead, equally geared. PLD does have the singularly best damage buff in game, Berserk does not compare. PLD v MRD? different game XD

From my limited testing: PLD in Sword Oath with Slashing debuff applied > no Defiance WAR = Sword Oath PLD > Defiance WAR >> Shield Oath PLD

Something's wrong with your test then. Dozens of people have tested with numbers to prove that the only way PLD in Sword Oath can out DPS a WAR is when it has the slashing debuff given by the WAR. Else a lone PLD win Sword Oath slashing the dummy will not surpass the lone WAR slashing on a dummy.

No Enmity generating skills (ironically as an Enmity reduction one though), terrible cooldowns for tanking, loses Heavy Trust from being in the front therefore doing even less damage which will mean lost of threat (if they ever get it to begin with). There's nothing about a dragoon except a decent HP pool (which is useless without the mitigation) that even remotely says offtank.

Where you really being serious ? This is the first time I ever see someone even make this claim.

I'm wondering this as well. But it's also not the first time I have seen someone suggest that Dragoons can be off tanks either. I was in an Ramuh Ex party a few weeks ago which was running with a solo tank. The tank then said that if he died I should run to B (which was a mark 90 degrees to the tanks right) and act as an off tank while he was rezzed and collected 3 orbs. I didn't voice my opinion but I'm sure you can gather my reaction. The person with the lowest magic defence tanking an enemy who throws about lightning bolts for fun. What could possibly go wrong?

Of course the tank did die and I went and took up my spot on the executioners block. I'll show how it went in gif form.

What you call a "back up tank" is 2 attacks worth of damage. With elusive jump in use for repositioning you won't even be anywhere near the top of enmity 90% of the time anyway.
DRG would be fine with their current DPS throughput if they did infact have some form of utility like bards do for example. But they don't.
I did tank Ifrit HM as a joke once, but then again that could have been any DPS with the amount of heals I was receiving.

I think SE has this idea about an off-tank job but sadly ideas don't make it a viable application.
