I want to clarify a few things here.
I never said I was offended. I said it broke my immersion.
Yes my character does other things that I wouldn't do. But none of those other things make me feel like SE thinks this is a "boys only" game.
I never asked for a big game overhaul. I explicitly said that I would be fine with the scene as long as my character didn't look like she wanted to get in on the action.
Furthermore, to say that the NPC is talking to the female player character just because he wants to get her "professional" opinion is playing devil's advocate and it's this view that is "seeing something that isn't there." The demeanor of the NPC is clearly "Bro, I want to bang her." And the player character is shown as though he/she wholeheartedly understands. Also, the way the camera goes up the twins' bodies, you can't say that it's just me sexualizing something innocent (well you can say that, some of you did say that, but you'd be wrong).
What saddens me is that whenever something like this comes up, there's "slippery slope" talk about "bending over backwards" and "catering to everyone" etc. Nobody is asking for major changes to the whole game: selecting sexual orientation at start up and having different cutscenes or anything LOL. Actually, I was fine with the cutscene as is (sexual objectification of women though it may be) providing my character didn't look interested in the women also. So if anything, it would've been less work to make me happy, not more. At this point, I don't care if that scene is changed (that WOULD be more work), just that going forward, SE keep in mind that women play the game also and some of them might not like how women are portrayed.
Lastly, for all the people chiming in with their "I'm a woman too" street cred. I'm not sure what that proves. You don't speak for all women anymore than I do (that anyone would believe that is absurd). The fact that all women aren't offended, or all gay people, or all straight people, or all Miqo'te is great. Stating it as though it has any bearing whatsoever on how someone else should feel (whether they share common characteristics or not) makes no sense.
I think what makes this thread different than a thread about the appearance of armor is that sexism is a touchy subject and that's understandable. But asking for a thread to be locked on what, page 2? Just because the topic is difficult?
And shame on people for thinking that caring about people's feelings when designing content is not worth doing. Yes, it is impossible to please everyone, but would you cease trying to be the best you can be just because perfection is impossible? I hate the idea that if we care about hurting someone's feelings, somehow all the fun will be sanitized out of the world.
There's a lot more fun in the world than hurting people's feelings. And I think there's a lot to be said for being a friend to women rather than trying to dominate or exclude them. All I ask is that you try to understand where I'm coming from. Debate it all you want. I leave this thread here for SE to think about when they design future content.
