    It's a very good question!

    The answer has 2 parts really.

    1. Consumers want it all. They don't want to feel like "I'm new and because I wasn't here I can't have this".
    2. Developers that make something want to keep making money off of it.

    Many games solve this issue by making events an annual thing. If you don't get it this Halloween, you can try again next one.
    Others place value on these items, make them tradable, and saving/selling/hoarding them is a big deal.

    This however makes it part of the game you're paying for and part of your subscription.

    The cash shop allows them to now change this up and literally make money directly off things like art for clothes.

    If it becomes accepted by players expect more $$ exclusives like Slepnir soon.

    The way it was translated by Koji is a bit vague, but what was said in Japanese was more clear.

    (I'm going to be lazy and write the loan words in English...)

    例えば、この先minionわ一切in-gameの中に取れいずに、item shopだけで販売させるじゃないかと。 NOです。

    In other words:
    "For example, will all minions from now on be in the item shop and not available in game? No."

    Koji's live translation was:
    "For example, will future minions only be obtainable through optional item sales shop? No."

    Koji's translation is good, but can be read both ways, whereas Yoshida's comment in Japanese is slightly more clear. They mean that they will continue adding in-game minions as well as what's in the cash shop, not that the cash shop minions will be also available in-game. This was made more clear by his follow-up comment that the profits from the Item Shop will go back to the game and can fund, for example, more in-game minions, outfits, etc.

    Anyway, we will see soon enough, but obviously there's still confusion on this point.

    If you seriously think FFXIV will go F2P you have no clue what you talking about. Hell man, FFXI is still P2P and it never had as much support as FFXIV is getting at the moment. FFXI is the game Square made the most profit with. They will never ever make FFXIV go F2P and lose almost all of their customers. You can compare FFXIV with FFXI or WoW, but not with 2nd rank games like Rift or LOTRO, which were all fail right from the start. If they wanted FFXIV to become F2P after a while they would have done so with 1.0 and not put all the time and effort into 2.0.

    You guys should stop making shit up in your imaginary worlds and just go with the flow. Everything you guys do or say is based on assumptions, without any kind of proof or legit base. I give you two solid examples of games that never went F2P, one being the biggest MMO ever, including a cash shop that only added a few mounts and a few minions.

    I'd be much more pleased if they would limit cash shop items to exclusively past event items.

    Everyone who keeps up a sub would get them all for free as they release, the only people getting milked for cash for vanity items are the people who didn't pay for a sub for the full games release.

    As it stands I have no plans to use the cash shop becasuse I feel it rewards the withholding of desirable content from players who pay a monthly sub. If they were to limit these items to ones that were available in-game for a limited time I would have no problem dishing out 5 bucks here and there for something like the chocobo mask or the black onion helm.

    Legacy players may not enjoy releasing their exclusivity status on a few items, but there would be no doubt that the funds raised were being put towards new content that would be available to everyone who plays an not just those with big wallets.

    First of all and lets get this out of the way immediately...the legacy players are the ones who helped fund it's transition into the game you came to enjoy when was re-released as ARR, the legacy players suffered through version 1.0 which was not as fun and had a vast array of problems but those players kept funding it through continued subscriptions in order to help improve it and turn it around, the legacy players are the ones who gave the feedback and helped create the ARR of which you enjoy today from that feedback.

    Those who came after it was relaunched are not the ones that made it a success, it was the legacy players which did that in conjunction with the developers and your merely reaping the reward so do not get quite so high and mighty on that subject.

    Wow did a legacy player throw your cat down a well or push your grand parent in front of a bus? Seriously I do not know why you have such obvious contempt for them, but you need to stop spouting nonsense about legacy players in the context of their contribution towards ARR and it's success because you are incredibly wrong in so many ways regarding the legacy players contributions to the creation of ARR vs new players which benefited from their feedback and funding during the transition from 1.0.

    As a Legacy player I do care, if only a bit, because cash shops never get removed once implemented so that path is already set in stone. Honestly the game went on a completely different direction from 1.23 and into a more WoWish direction right from the start, that raised red flags for a lot of old players if not completely alienated some.

    Then there's the players who always straight up hated 1.0 even after its updates and were either still playing it and stayed subbed just to support ARR or they weren't and had already discarded the game without keeping up to date with it, mostly because I guess no one ever bothered to re-review after its patches, and why would they really. Either way they most likely wanted something completely different and I guess they got it.

    As bad as 1.0 was in general it did get fixed up right until the very end, though it was still lacking in a lot of areas content and system/engine wise. I think what kept most people or at least personally was just the promise, especially the world and lore were good to build upon.

    Some unfinished class plots were great and were building up to something better, instead we got brand new stories that mostly disregard the old events, some of them just as good as the old ones mind you, others not so much. The copy pasted areas were really big so most expected them to get filled with more unique landmarks, buildings, dungeons and other interesting stuff, instead we did get more unique maps but they're probably the tiniest maps in recent MMO history. The old combat was slow, as slow as your average FF, but it had its own unique rhythm and feel, instead we got your average tab targeting mash the keys as soon as they light up once the slow GCD allows it combat. The old game had plenty of viable horizontal progression with primal weapons, GC gear, crafted gear, Gianstgall from Skirmish, some Beastmen Stronghold gear and some dungeon gear with those endgame dungeons only limited to a 15 min lockout, instead we got vertical progression with weekly lookouts. A lot of people expected a game that would remain P2P without a cash shop, instead we're now getting a P2P game (but for much how longer?) with a cash shop.

    I'll like to play Devil's Advocate (?? Unsure of proper usage) and say that if you are referring to past event gear, then if you were actively subscribing at the time, there should be little reason as to why you were unable to obtain it in that timeframe. If you picked up the game later, you actually did NOT pay for it because your subscription started after the event, and thus your money did not go into 'paying' for the past event gear.

    Is that how it works? I dunno, I've never played this role much before.

    Otherwise, I do agree with the rest of your post.
